Should I worry about Impreza transmission?

I'm not an Impreza owner just yet and one of my few negatives is transmisson reliabilty.
I'm looking for late "Classic" shape cars say T to X with 50K miles. How likely is a transmission failure at 50K on a standard UK car? or even a UK with a Prodrive ECU? if its on the original clutch would it be ready for a change?
I've owned a Pulsar GTIR which went through a gearbox and two clutches and am buying an Impreza now partly as I don't need/can't afford 'box rebuilds every year.

Says he who has done a multitude of track days and now runs about 120 BHP over standard and is still on his original box and had his clutch slip only when he ran 22 PSI boost
They are not bad when you put it that way
If you treat the box nice and run up to decat PPP levels of torque (say 260-270 lbft) you should find it pretty reliable.
My clutch did 30000 miles, 20000 of those between 260 working up to est. 370 lbft and 406 BHP and only slipped when T-uk launched it badly (you oversteering non-straightline god ) on his farm road LOL
Every time we changed the turbo (about 8 times or so) it burned like hell getting the car up on the ramps, but it only slipped significantly that once. The flywheel was not blacked and there is still plenty of material on it. 406 BHP proven standard clutch for sale anyone ?

Its not that I'm not prepared to deal with these things when they happen (like to spend the cash on a few sensible mods/paranoia gauges ) its just I need the car to be reliable and having it off the road for weeks at a time during a year just isn't funny ala' GTIR.

jb,
only because there are all these spare bits from your car kicking about here and I know there will be a cheap lateral box when you buy an M5 on monday morning . that launch was a break down in communication, I though you said it was about time I lunched it
drive them hard and even standard cars boxes fail. even if they do not do track days and drags.
my own car has done about 15 track days in the 220-260bhp class and only about 10 standing starts with 15k of road use.
you can usually get 2nd hand boxes fairly quickly which is a plus to the scoob.

My UK Impreza lasted 124,000miles on it's first clutch as far as I could tell was worn to the studs.. nothing in the thorough history to say it had been changed before..
Now on 136,000miles and original box.. power upped slighly from standard since about 100,000, and not driving lightly but lots of motorway miles admittedly.
Plus standard spec clutchs from Borg and Beck are £85..
Depends on how you drive it though.. if you were getting through that many clutches and gearbox rebuilds on a standard GTiR then perhaps it is your driving at fault not the car? No offence meant.. just trying to save you money.

Cheers for the advice chaps. I've bought one anyway! Pick it up end of the week.
Jolly green monster - no offence taken mate , think I got a bit of a dog with the GTIR.

I reckon you only need to worry when running in the 300hp+ spec. Mine lasted a hell of a long time running at just under 300, and finally lunched itself within 3 power runs after swapping from winter to summer tyres running around 360hp (and only 320lb/ft).
I put this down to the additional shock loading caused by increased grip from summer tyres. I had already done 15 power runs on winter tyres and same power with no problem. I run a very track biased set-up which puts considerable stress on drivetrain over bumpy b-roads and the like.
