Treat your self to a Halfrauds 8mm combi ratchet/open ended spanner, leave the IC in place - the heatsheild comes off and out in about 4 minutes......I promise.

edited to say......wrap your DP though, ever noticed how close to you brake master cylinder res it is ?

i've tried unsuccesfully to find which bit rattles - i know its near the top. i have tightened all the bolts i can see but with no success. i might try the jubilee clip first tho.

Two prime places this peice of sheilding will rattle, they are :
Just out of reach on both the left and right hand sides if you 'attack' from above. Looking from above on the right there is a single bolt that goes through two peices separate of heatshield and fastens against the DP...this is a biatch to get at without removing the IC but it can be done. On the left there are two bolts which also locate in the DP and both these secure the DP heatshield......I am actually missing one of them, but the other is so tight the thing can't rattle. These two bolts are far easier to get at if you are underneath your car. Picture of one LHS bolt below, the other was outta shot.....sorry

as it is rattling and annoying the hell out of me i was thinking of taking it off and wrapping the pipe.

does anyone know if its possible to remove with it in situ or is it the ball ache job of removing the d/p ?

It's quite possible to remove it with the d/p in place. There are about 6 bolts on my 99. It's very fiddly (sp?) so it's probably best to remove the intercooler.

It is actually possible to remove it with the intercooler in place, but its a way tight fit

i'm only having to do it cos my local dealer went t1ts up and can't wait any longer.

i've noticed its close to a lot of things - but i have'nt got a clue what they are. i could show you around the human body but when it comes to engines if it hasn't got a yellow cap i don't know what it is or does.

how much wrap should i use? is a double layer in order because of its proximity to these other bits?

When I woz looking at removing mine, to change the DP, IanW suggested that after running his car without a heat shield he had problems with his clutch, see This Thread, I'm guessing with the master cylinder for the clutch directly above it, it must've boiled his clutch fluid

Aren't you better off trying to find the cause of the rattle and rectifying that, after all the heat shield is only gonna rattle if it isn't bolted down correctly or it's in contact wiv something.

Personally I couldn't get the heat shield off without removing the IC, though I imagine brute force would prevail . Removal of the IC though is **** and gives so much better access to it all anyways.

 

Jubilee Clip??? You sure it's the heat shield that's rattling?

Has the car been "DeCatted" as there are mounts on the standard exhaust for the heat shield that wont be there. Also it's almost certain that the heatshield would've had to have been modified to accomodate a larger DP, in which case it may be in contact wiv the exhaust?

 

I'm sure somebody here should invent a little person who can sit in the engine bay and listen whilst we give our cars stick.

I had the same prob with the heatsheild, put the car over a pit and located the rattle it came from two overlapping pieces of the sheild. drilled a small hole through one piece and fitted a self tapping screw about 1/4" long this pushed the offending vib pieces apart. Job done. You need to rev the engine a little first to locate the area.

 

im having to do my d/p this w/e cos after fitting the centre and backbox ive now found a rust hole in the original d/p!! so off it comes and on goes my new(ish) scorpian d/p

Any one had any probs getting the d/p off the turbo???

Not if you douse the whole thing in vast quantities of WD40 the evening before you do the work....just remember it will smoke a bit when you fire it up after completion

 

cheers bottomfeeder will be on that tonight going to get the turbo heatshield off...then douse it in WD.
