Unhappy

On my way home tonight I changed up from 2nd to 3rd. Gear **** went to usual position (no noise) but gear won't engage. This now happens on way up and on way down gears. All other gears apart from 3rd engage correctly. No sign of clutch slipping and no funny noises.

Any ideas what this might be and who might be able to look at it for me to investigate the problem?

if ur lucky it might be the bushes in the gear lincage ,i recently did a clutch and 1 of the bushes fell out and i didnt spot it when i got the clutch back in i couldnt select any gears and it felt like id put something back wrong.perhaps 1 of the bushes has worn and is afecting it thus.there are 2 sets 1 set under gear stick gator and 1 under car..this is on my 96 back as these are only ones ive seen.i hope it is this m8 or itl be costly .try these 4 any play.

Thanks, may well be as I had just hit a speed ramp (not on the open road before I get slated - damn golf course) a bit hard before the problem started. I see if I can get someone to have a look. I have not had any problems before today.

Just been to garage and had it up on ramp. Bushes appear OK and linkagage seems to be moving fine. Now I sometimes have problems with it kicking out of second. Any other ideas what it may be.

Garage told me might be better (cheaper) to get second hand or reconditioned box as labour involved in tracing problem could be expensive and car would be off road whilst parts are ordered and replaced.

I had no problems with the gearbox til this week and it still drives fine in other gears - no noise e.t.c

I was talking to a subaru tech yesterday and he said that not being able to shift into gear is usually a sign of fragmented gear teeth binding the path of the shifter in the gearbox. That probably doesn't give you any comfort but it might help to diagnose the problem and not be too expensive.

good luck,
Robert
