Red face

Everywhere near my house there's a bit of a slope, so I've not got round to checking my oil for the last 8,000 miles (since 500 after 1k service when it was fine). This was about 2 months ago - I just never quite got round to it.

Checked it last night and OMFG!!! Took 2 litres to get it to the middle of the dipstick. Any ideas how much damage I might have caused?

None, but mention it to your dealer that it was "low". Loads of people have complained of the same, and I'm seriously starting to wonder if Subaru have got something wrong.

I personally would of contacted the dealership, get them to collect the car and sort the oil level out, thatway, if later problem with engine damage, you would be covered.

Dealers tend just to fill with 4 litres on a service as not to cause overfill and bung up your boost system. They seem to think that the small amount always within the drained system and the additional 4 ltr's should be fine.
I always check my oil weekly and especially after a service.

I found on my WRX03 in order to take some correct oil measurements that I should warm it until it reaches working temp and only after >20 min can see right oil levels, otherwise ALWAYS it's below lower mark so it's quite possible that you have overfilled it...
Have a look again with the above procedure and tell us your findings please, I had also (as many others) some oil consumption.

Jim's spot on with his "how to measure" advice above, it's just what the dealer told me too. But mine was still below "l"...

I changed the factory oil at 200 kms with mineral Motul 10W/40 and added about 400-500 mls before next oil change at 1400 km.
Motul V300 10W/40 Chrono at 1400 km and added about 300 ml before next oil change at 5000 km.
Now I have 9000 km on the clock on my new WRX03 and added again 200 ml of oil, although I am going to use Castrol RS10W/60 next time and see how it goes. Actually I am going to use Castrol due to noisy tappets with Motul and not due to oil consumption, bear in mind also that I rev it free here and there with ambient temp more than 35C degrees which affects some how oil consumption!
WRX03 owners post your experiences please!

Question

The MY99/00s never drank oil from new, i.e the majority of them. Why would the MY02/03s drink oil? Where's the difference? I thought they're more or less the same engine, at least in the bottom end department.

Cheers,

george.

I have WRX 03 with PPP have had similar problem 2500 miles after 1st service done at 1200 miles there was a thread on here about oil consumption so checked my oil level it to was not even on the bottom of the dip stick. Mild panick anyway it took 1 litre to get back to the right mark on the dipstick and I know keep a regular eye on it and top up as and when.

Regards

John

Just check mine and the oil is half way up the dipstick.

Car is an 03MY with PPP, 7K miles. Sounds like the dealers aren't filling them correctly at the 1K service, for those with problems. The 00MY I had before this never needed topping up between services either.

Suggest we all check our oil levels after servicing.

before you lot start going off on one at the dealers again a bullitin was issued saying that turbo engines from 2000 onwards ( if i recall the year right) should be filled so that when hot the oil level is on the top hole. this then gives a maximum level when cold about halfway up the dipstick. the dealer is probably just following i.m and subarus recommendation.
