talking to a subaru dealer today , re . doing a oil change , and mentioned dissconecting the crank sensor and removing a plug , basically they laughed at me and said that subaru have never mentioned anything of the sort regarding oil changes and he also said it would be ok to use gtx magnetec 10/40 as the garage im talking of have never dissconnected crank sensor or theplugs whilst doing an oil change and they always use magentec, this is coming from a subaru dealer in the north of england, so im in two minds as to what to do as im being told one thing off the experts in here , and told another by a genuine subaru dealer , HELP..............

Basically they are full of shi*..!!! as are alot of dealers..!

The info you get on here is from people who know what they are on about i.e specialists, and they personally get to see the inside of an engine after it has blown up e.t.c...

The dealer probably has some contract with castrol e.t.c and get supplied ship loads of GTX magnatec.. [is the penny dropping yet]

Castrol GTX magnatec is only ***SEMI-SYNTHETIC***

If fully synthetic is good enough for F1 teams and world rally teams then its goog enough for me..

There is plenty of evidence to suggest that International Motors have made mention of this sort of technique. If you do a search on here you might even find a copy of the bulletin.

so im in two minds as to what to do as im being told one thing off the experts in here , and told another by a genuine subaru dealer
"Genuine" Subaru dealer? Is there any such thing as a genuine car dealer? At the end of the day this garage probably don't give a sh*t whether they do it right or not, as they'll get paid for fixing the failures anyway...

It's simple enough. Either you go with the collective wisdom that's been expressed in here - and by a number of people who are higher up the food chain than common or garden garage mechanics, or you don't.

If you don't bother dry-cranking, you will probably still be fine. However, there's more than enough evidence to suggest that the EJ20 engine is particularly prone to oil pressure interruption-related problems, and thus taking a few minutes to do the job properly may save you an expensive failure further down the line. So, what are you going to do?

Dav27,

I would deffinitly have the superchip looked at as ive heard many many horror stories on here about them, bascially all i think it does is remove the fuel cut and raise the boost level e.t.c..!!!

The scoobyECU is thought of pretty highly on here and i too am about to the take the plung, at least just for the added safety of the fueling e.t.c..

The jerking could be all sorts i.e oil level to high, and contaminating the boost solonoid, i used to have this problem when i first got the car.. I changed the oil to the correct level and replaced the spark plugs at the same time. When i did the plugs i also found one of the coil packs had broken up.. Since i fixed all this the car has been fine..

I contacted Mobil Technical when my first oil change was due, and they said either Mobil one 0/40 or 15/50 were O.K. for road use, but 15/50 for competition, they did say that Subaru only recommend 5/40, (which you can't buy anymore) because that is what they tested and approved. I've used 0/40 for the last 2 years without any problems. I certainly wouldn't use anything but fully synthetic in any Turbo car..I ran a chipped Escort Turbo on Mobil one for 100,000 miles with no engine problems.
