As title,

My car is due for another oil change.

I have previously used Shell Helix Plus 10W 40. However, i have an annoyingly noisy tappet or two (legacy turbo) and thought i would give it an engine flush, and then try a different oil this time.

The local Halfords has just started to stock the 15W 50 grade of Mobil 1 oil. Has anybody tried this oil in a turbo subaru, and if so, any comments good or bad appreciated.

Ian

p.s. genuine subaru filter always used too.

can i ask what made you change to the motul? or was it just handier to buy locally?

anyone else got any views?

i seem to remember hearing bad thing s about the mobil 1 oil, but i think that was refering to the 0w rating, being too thin or something?

Prodrive seem to recommend either Motul 300V 15w/50 or Mobil 1 Motorsport 15w/50 to privateer WRC car owners, which says a lot about these two oils.

As far as hearing "something bad" about the Mobil, the only thing you're likely to have heard is indeed that the "normal" 0w/40 grade Mobil 1 is a bit too thin for these cars. The 15/50 version is fine - use with confidence!

BTW, it's probably better for you to not use engine flush. Just drop the old oil out and put the new in. Also worth reading the "FAQS ON OIL CHANGE" thread in General Technical.

Yip, The Mobil Motorport is good stuff. I use it in my Subaru, and have found it to help quieten noisy tappets in some cases for older legacy's.

Thumbs up

I've used Mobil 1 15/50 for over 15k miles of track days, 1/4 mile drag racing days, rolling road days and just general thrashing No problems

steve, im glad to hear you mention about possibly helping the tappets, they are driving me around the bend there is only one or two really noisy on occasion though, rest are silent.

andy, if its good enough for a high power scooby on track days, that'll do me

got the oil yesterday afternoon from halfords 4ltr was down from £33 to £27. had to get 2 to allow for top-ups with these cossie pistons.
just going to get a filter from the dealer in the morn.

oh, and the engine flush can stay on the shelf in the garage then, not taking a risk.

thanks,
ian

Just out of interest - I used to use Mobil 1 15/50 - which I thought was fine...

...however when I changed to Motul 300V 15/50 my catch tank stopped filling up with oil. Which implies that Mobil creates a lot of vapour which in a standard car is going straight back into the engine. It will condense in your intercooler. Oil vapour will increase det - but I suppose it is ok if you are venting to somewhere else other than the induction.

Not sure how the vapourisation affects the oil performance - but something to thing about.

Interesting ! I have also used the Motul oil which I believe is slightly 'thicker' despite sharing the same viscosity rating as the Mobil

Give it a bit of time to work its self in. My Leg T and me mates both run on Mobil 15/50 and were both noisey for the first hundred or so miles and then got quieter.

It could be that the new oil is cleaning all the old gummy deposits out and they are taking their time getting to the filter.

May be / may be not.

I still get the odd day where the buggas make a right racket but most of the time they are fairly quiet.

Good Luck.

P.S

If you kept the receipt for the flush, why not exchange it for some sort of hydraulic lifter treatment?

I've used Wynnes and Forte and both seem to help... if only very slightly.. its something.

Ian thats good to hear

My tappets take the pi$$ and start rattling when your mates are near the car or someone has complemented me on it.

I was parked up for the night on a campsite on Sunday night.

Our friends were talking about the car to my other half and within ear shot of our campsite neighbours.

The bloke shouted over that he heard it on the way in and was going to listen to it on the way out.

I thought ok I'll let her warm up and then give it death when I get to the main road (bout 3 miles. I started the bugga up and it went straight into TDI mode

The only way to get rid of the rattle before then engine is completly warm is to give a quick blat in neutral to prime up the offending tappet.

I don't think it will be long though before Imprezza heads will be fitted.

Tek care mate.

Look forward to hearing how ya get on.

Ste.

yeah i know the 'well timed tappets'........mine usually go into tractor mode when i pull up at the lights, cos theres a load of lads that look at the car when they hear it coming, i just look the other way lol

winds you up doesnt it cos people think your engine is buggered!

been out again tonight, tappets seem more rattly all the time, but the loud tapping noise i was getting before. i think it needs a good blast to sort it lol.

averaging 22mpg on easy driving is annoying too, used to get 29mpg for same driving .........soddin cars.

You can make that work for you though. Just imagine their faces when they think they're being smoked by a diesel Legacy!

greasemonkey,
Who exactly is it that says that Mobil One 0/40 is too thin for these cars ? I've used it for 2 years without any problems, no bad tappet rattle, and I've never used the complicated no spark cranking method..just a normal oil change, just like I've done for years. The only time I've done the no spark cranking was on my race engines after a rebuild, but not on normal road engine oil change..?
