Exclamation

Surely not? However after Dyney installed my knocklink last night (many thanks Iain) it was lighting up the lowest light on idle This was with the sensitivity wound up however. The sensitivity has been wound back so the light disappears, but I have my concerns. Am I experiencing knock on idle? There is no audible det, well not like the Escort rallycar used to get, but can anyone allay my fears?

The car is a UK MY99 - Full decat - Dawes at 1.2 bar on WOT in 4th - always run on Esso SUL or Optimax - 36K miles - lambda link showing green immediately on throttle.

Just need interim help until the LINK ECU makes its way from my bedroom onto the car.

Thanks in advance

R

It's not registering det, it's registering ugliness

Sorry dude, totally no use to you there I know. I'll move over and let the people in the know help you out.
Hope it's nothing

sounds strange as I only see 1 light on full boost with no octaine booster on an STI5. Tickover deffinetly produces nothing (apart from the dim power light)

Edited to say, maybe you have something loose that is vibrating at tickover ??

I've got MY00 with full decat and get no lights at all, on full sensitivity, until I'm over 6k, then only 1 green - the 2nd green just flicks if I push the red line...

Richard,

The very first light is always on, just very dim. This is registering that the display has power. It's not just that is it. If it's actually picking up noise (doesn't necessarily mean det), then it would flicker/illuminate a much brighter (and noticeable) green.

Secondly, where exactly is the sensor installed?

Thirdly, tap the sensor (well the bolt holding it to be precise) and see if it starts lighting up the display. That way you'll know it's working.

If it is registering noise on idle, then I'd try and stick DeltaDash on the car to see if the ECU's actually detecting knock or if it's genuine engine noise from some other source.

Yes the power light is on. With sensitivity wound to max its flickering brighter. It lit up three lights on test when hit with a spanner. The mic is fitted to the back of the block below the intercooler. Sh1tting myself now

It's not going to be knocking on idle - can't see how it's possible, actually
I occassionaly get 'noise' at idle as I have an APS FMIC with the usual dodgy metal thingy under the engine - at idle, if there's even the lightest 'cough' from the car (start up, etc - you know the stuff), the tube ***** the engine & gives me a flicker on the knocklink - the first green light, anyway
Could there be a spanner sitting down there or something? Something a little lose or close to another part?

Could be that you have something loose, it won't be det but could be bad slap, can you hear anything if you listen for that ?

Hre's the sound file for piston slap to help you diagnose the sound. Provided by Alan Leslie who is a member of Scoobynet.

Rich,
It's just noise! There maybe a bracket loose or something causing the idle flicker (or it could be my wiring
I told you about the lights when hitting the limiter, but I didn't expect you to go and try it!

If you find you are gettting no knock at high revs or loads at low revs give me a shout and we'll have a more indepth look.

Sorry would have road tested it with you but was already in the dog house with agreeing to fit it (and apparently not telling her you were coming down!!) All sorted now though

Do you get any lights at high revs (6k and up)?

We tested it by tapping a bar resting on the bolt through the mic (Not hitting the mic with a spanner!!!)

The first green was flickering at idle.
I turned the sensetivity down a touch and gave it some revs from almost cold. It showed nothing
The mic is mounted on the bracket under the I/C almost central on the block just fwd of the bell housing.

Looks like I was worrying over nothing

I turned the sensitivity up this morning and did a 15 mile journey to work instead of the usual three. Not a peep from it on idle or through various levels of boost. Phew.

I have also lowered boost on the Dawes to 1.05 Bar in this hot weather just to be on the safe side until the Link is on.

Many thanks for all the advice and I'm sorry Iain for getting you in the poo with the missus

No wonder she doesnt like me
