Jumping out of 5th gear.

30 mins? Are you sure about that? Even if you do it with the box on the car, the propshaft and centre diff still need to be removed, which is a good hour plus to remove and refit, not to mention the time taken to drain and refill the gearbox.

If you're sure about the timing, they can't have executed the "proper" fix, although it'd certainly be interesting to find out what they did do in that time to show such a marked improvement.

I just thought i would start this thread to see if anybody else has experienced this problem. Started last night while on the motorway at about 85mph, slowly accelerated and it jumped out of gear. Slowed down but everytime i selected 5th it would stay in but jumped out as soon as any power was applied. I am now resigning myself to the fact that i'm going to remove the box and strip it. Any advice would be appreciated.

P.S. sorry i forgot to add the car is a MY00 uk car with no mods but with about 70000mls and 5mths out of warranty.

It is a known problem on 99/00 boxes. There is a lock nut which becomes loose. Apparently it can be fixed with the box in situ. Search on old threads on this.

John is dead right.
Had this happen on my 1999 UK Scooby, dealer fixed it in 30 mins, no big deal. Never did it again.

Yes I agree, they would have to remove the box from the car and remove the transfer case to access the nut, that way they could tilt the gearbox so no loss of oil.

I replied to a similar recent thread with this:

My MY00 did this.

Apparently it's a known problem that a few of our cars have.

As I understood it, a nut (the stake nut) on the input shaft in the gear box comes loose (because it wasn't secured properly in the factory) allowing the 5th gear to wander back and forth which results in it popping out of 5th from time to time, especially when backing off then back on the throttle.

Fortunately for me, it happened to mine when my car was still in warranty.
They replaced the nut and the 5th gear, and I've not had a problem since.

If your car doesn't have an extended warranty, then sorry - I don't think it'll be cheap!
Hope I'm wrong about that bit......

Just like to say thanks for the advice. I phoned the dealer and spoke to a technician who gave me advice on what to do. Stripped it down in situ, took my time and found the 5th gear locknut loose on the end of the layshaft. Cleaned it up and re-torqued it with loctite. Re-built it all and everything is fine. Total bill was about 15 quid for oil and gasket.
