is it just the noise?, check your water pump if so. I had a scare with a knocking noise, I was getting prices for engines etc, took it to a specialist and they said the only thing they'd do to confirm it was gone was take the belts off. They agreed it did sound terminal, got a call later saying it was the water pump, they took the belts off and ran the engine, no noise.
To say I was relieved was an understatement. Really was a knocking noise too.
As far as getting it rebuilt though, you should get emails from people (like I did) who will see this post, that is if you haven't allready

First off, the engine cannot be run with the Water pump belt off (it is rotated by the timing belt) i dont mean to contridict you but it was the garage that told you that anyway. Secondly, a replacement engine (if needed) can be sourced for much less than £2200 so i think it is a bit unfair to worry people with figures like that. Admmittedly the replacement engine will not be new but 80% of people replace engines with second hand units, a rebuild is not always the way forward financially.

Preying didn't help too much.
My big end has gone.
Mike from Rivett says he could source me a recon engine from £1200 plus fitting costs.
From the numbers floating around that seems pretty good.
Anyone with a better idea?

tweenirob Sti v4 second hand engines are like rocking horse poo at the moment. I know I've been trying to get one for the last few days
Sourcing a new block would be circa £1000.00, sourcing a short block with engine parts circa £2350-2650 (all figures plus vat)
With labour ontop.........
