Does anyone have a definitive answer as to whether MY99/00 are prone to piston slap? Even a vague idea would help me out at the moment...

I've not heard of any 99 or 00 Turbo's with piston slap, they do break in other ways though!

Very rare on 99/00 cars, more common on 97/98 cars.

I've seen 2 99s and have heard of an 01 with this but not seen it myself.

On that basis, I think we can assume that these cars were just built at the edge of the allowed tolerance and that piston slap is not a problem with them.

So Pete,

Have you guys at Scoobysport have any experience with seeing MY99/00s with noisey cambelt tensioners (as in the thread in the General section (like at the top of this page))?

I'm think there may be a possibility that my MY99 has been diagnosed with piston slap incorrectly.

Yes Ben, I have seen those too.

If the noise doesn't go away within the first few miles of running from cold, its not piston slap.

The noise does go away after 5-15mins (depending on the ambient temperature). It certainly has all the symptoms of piston slap but the experiences outlined on the other thread also fit the symptoms of a cambelt tensioner problem: i.e. both the cambelt tensioner and piston slap both make a knocking noise when cold which goes away when warmed up.

I guess the only answer is to get a second opinion - although this is a pain in the butt as the engine needs to be cold meaning leaving it over night!

If was slap and was there for 5 minutes let alone 15 minutes, it would be so severe that you wouldn't want to run the engine.

The cam belt tensioner takes a lot longer to warm up and this is what I would investigate on your car.

I spoke to the service manager of Tiley of Bristol yesterday afternoon and he says that cambelt tensioner problems don't stop making noise when the engine heats up. What do you make of this?

Sorry to hijack (it is relevant though ) but I've got a piston slap noise on my car which seemed to appear overnight and was first heard after a 15 minute drive. It does seem to go when really warmed up though i.e. >20 mins. Can piston slap be ruled out?

The thing is, my cambelt tensioner was replaced as part of the 45k service 15 months ago so isn't it unlikely that the new part has 'failed'? (Although ditto the earlier question about what is actually going on to cause the noise).
