Question

Hi,

was wondering if anyone else had experienced this:

when shifting quickly form 4th-5th, the 'box grates as you try to engage 5th cog. this only happens during rapid shifts, and the more you wring out 4th gear, the worse the grating is when you go for 5th. When pootling about there are no problems.

The car is an my02 sti, 20k miles on the clock. Is it likely that this will be fixed under warranty or will they take it for a spin round the block and claim that there is no problem?

TIA

Charlie.

The first step should be to drain the gearbox and re-fill with Castrol Syntrax.
It ried full synthetic gear oil in my 99my and got the very problem you describe. Changing to Syntrax cured the problem, as it has with quite a few guys on here.

They're not going to laugh when they discover the circumstances in which this grating occurs, and if it doesn't happen during normal driving they'll just fob you off. Normal driving, no grating. Rinse it out and ram the shift home and they'll say "that's not covered under warranty". Lose-lose situation!

Change the fluid.

Its a common Subaru problem. Could be 1 of 2 things:
syncro has gone
a bolt (may be peened) has come loose inside the box.

Hopefully its the later of the 2.

Use the search for loads more info.

My TypeR does it, I have yet to cure it. An oil change doesn't help me and i'm reluctant to pull the box apart.

Thanks for the info. Think I'll try the syntrax options and see how it goes. If you are changing up below the rev limiter isn't that using the car as intended by the manufacturer? I don't really expect that argument to hold much water, but OTOH I can't see much point in having 260 horses in a turbo engine and always shifting at 3.5k.

what sort of revs does it do it at? if the crunch is there say ~4k and gets worse the higher you rev it?
If its under warranty i'd take it back and they should fix it..
Certainly not an uncommon problem.. just check the search
Oil change might help... but it'll still only sorta masking the probably worn synchro.

at the mo this is happening only when changing up at over 5k. even then it is possible to engange without crunching, you just got to shift slowly, as though you were driving an hgv. Problem does not occur on any other gears or shifting down.
