I will be in the UK end of June and would be interested to buy a bigger intercooler to bring home, can somebody tell me what the best option is with a decent quality/price ratio.

And does a '96 WRX have TD04 or TD05 turbo?

You maybe able to fit an Sti2 intercooler which is the same size though deeper.

You could fit a later intercooler though you would have to have many alterations to the pipe work, Ian at Hayward & Scott on 01268 727256 would be able to sort the pipework for you.

Turbo - depends if it is an early 96 (MY96) or a late 96 (MY97) car or not.

Does it have the slanty intercooler or the straight on one and is the turbo fed from the airfilter round the back of the inlet manifold or round the front?

If you've got the early slanted intercooler, the upgrade to a bigger MY97- can be done. Speak to Jonny Gav on here. He's got an STi6 intercooler on a MY95 WRX.
