Trans out - how much room needed?
#1
As it says....when removing the g`box from beneath the car how high off the ground does the car need to be? I don`t want it on axle stands with everything hangin out to find the car has to go 6inches higher!!!!!
Axle stands under sill, jack on toeing eye?

I'd want a bit more room than that.
I'm no expert (I've helped a good mechanic do a clutch change on my MY96 once) but I'd want it on a ramp so you can get at the gearbox to pull it off the dowels. (It's bound to get stuck & be awkward)
If you've not got access to a ramp, it may be easier to remove the engine & box as an assembly using an engine hoist, then fight them apart.
Just my personal preference. I get nervous crawling under badly supported heavy lumps of metal!

If you are removing the box only, then it would be a pointless excersize to remove the engine too.
Any good jack should get the car high enough to remove the box. All you really need is enough clearance for the tallest part, which is the bellhousing. Id guess at around 16" clearance should do, which most proper garage type jacks will give. A small cheapie jack wouldnt really give enough height easily.
Ive done a few, although I do have a good high lift jack, the job isnt that difficult. Obviously it is awkward, and annoying lying on ur back to do it, but not that difficult. Re-fitting is always worse.

Did this last night. No problem really.
The short Hallford type axle stands on the longest setting gave enough clearance. Not too bad a job (with 2 of you for the last few steps!!).
