Hi

Just done oil and filter change usually get garage to do it but car was leaking oil from cold and it appeared to be coming from oil filter. I wemt to undo old filter expecting the normal fight (as with escorts and starlet when i was allowed to change oil) but i managed to undo it by hand.
Should i be expecting a big problem to be coming my way or are they normally that easy on scoobs

You should be able to undo a scoob filter by hand as with any oil filter they should only be done up hand tight, and the access on scoobys is very good ie you can get a good grip to undo it.

Are you sure about that you should be able to undo it by hand?

They always seem to be more difficult to take off than to do up if you see what I mean. Never been able to get one off by hand before. I suspect yours was not as tight as it might have been, especially since you say the was oil leaking from the area.

because of the heat on the seal the seal ends up more attached to the block.

Never had an oil filter that I couldnt take off by hand, but I'm no weak sissy

Oil filter should be spun up to hand tight + 1/2 turn if mem serves me right....

I think the OE said about 1/2 to 3/4 turn

I had a Fram filter fitted recently, and I ended up with oil all over my drive, as it worked loose (crap seal etc)

Replaced it for an OE one, and no more leaks, and it isnt overly tight, and after 1000 miles it is still tight, unlike the Fram, which kept working loose

Last oil change on the scoob I was able to undo it by hand.. no leaks or problems either.. I fitted it 8000miles previous..

I tighten them as tight as I can by hand..

Changed the oil on my bike the other night and again I fitted the filter myself about 5000miles previous and couldn't get it off..
used my no useful tool (oooer) an oil filter remover which is like a large pair of pliers.. much quicker than the previous method of hammering a screw driver through it
