I can see you were overwhelmed by the responses..

My own experience with changing the up-pipe didn't appear to give any gains (MY99), what was unfortunate was trying various turbos at the time and not changing the up-pipe in isolation.

From what i read on this board, those that have the new shape Impreza with a cat in the up-pipe, some have stated that they have seen gains, whether it's all in the mind (wishing..) or factual, i don't know.

AndyF reported improvements, but again, this wasn't done in isolation. He had changed the up-pipe and also converted to front entry from 90 deg entry on his car and achieved measurable differences.

Is it worth it on it's own?....only my opinion obviously, but probably not.

Perhaps others can correct?

Depends if it is a MY01+.

These have cats in the up-pipe so replacing them with a straight through allows faster turbo spool up, more turbo noise and a bit more response at low revs. It also then allows the boost to be turned up without fear of melting the cat and damaging the turbo.

Alan

You have the 90 degree inlet? TD05 turbo?

AndyF found 30 brake at the wheels changing from 90 degree to front entry and changing the up-pipe at the same time i believe.

No Alan, what he is saying is, change your turbo to a tdo5 front entry turbo(involves a bit of work), and whilst you have the turbo off, you might as well put a new up pipe in.

TBH IMO (non scientific) if you are not going for big(ish) power (300+) then i personally would not bother, due to your up pipe not having a cat in there, so no major restricion.

Steven's correct. On it's own i wouldn't bother, but coupled with other mods, worthwhile doing.

The early cars have a turbo which has a 90 degree entry into the turbo.
To tell which you have you will see all pipework from the air filter will go to the turbo without any pipes going under the inlet manifold.

Later cars have an inlet pipe going under the inlet manifold to the turbo. This is a straight entry and normally have a TD04 turbo if it is a UK model Impreza.

Some mods done in isolation may not give the benefits hoped for (if any...), but carrying out several particular mods in one go, can give a worthwhile improvement. In other words an overall result.

The stock up-pipe is *horrible* - I'd replace it Port the headers while they're off too.
