My MY99 turbo has started blowing white/blue smoke badly, and has had an initial diagnosis by Subaru garage as having a blown turbo.

If it is the turbo, they estimate around £1300 for fitted replacement.

If it does need replacing - what alternative turbos would be recommended?

Who can do this job in Bucks/Herts area?

Not looking for BIG performance gains - reliability would be high priority.

Car has full decat exhaust, around 85k miles.

Ian

P.S. Annoying as I have been pretty good about warm-up cool-down as well.

Edited to adjust quote for replacement!
Standard Turbo is 860 + VAT

Cool

Have a chat with Mark @ Lateral Performance, he is in the right geographical area and knows a few things about turbos.

Also, I suspect you could find a standard td04 (iirc) turbo like your my99's for a lot less second hand. If you are happy to fix the problem rather than take the opportunity to upgrade to a bigger turbo then I would look at finding a standard one second hand from someone who has upgraded to something else. I have one hanging around gathering dust somewhere myself, as do many others I suspect.

Thanks Moray.

Do you have contact details for lateral performance to hand?

Would it not be better to replace the turbo with a new one given an old one would be far more likely to fail?

I don't want to have to replace the turbo again...

Are they available re-conditioned?

TD04 is pretty serviceable too - but Mark is definately who to check with!

Ian if you fit another turbo you'll really need to consider various other factors if you want the most out of it. These will likely cost at least as much as the turbo itself. Whilst I am a fan (sorry) of big turbos there is additional expense in getting the supporting components right, but the rewards are good.

Hi John,

Would you know if all replacement turbos require a remap or TEK2/3?

I'm keen to keep costs down - if there is no benefit replacing the standard turbo with higher performance one without spending lots more on other tuning, then I will simply stay with a standard turbo.

All turbo upgrades require custom mapping, fuel pump, knocklink and boost gauge.

Hmmm ... think I'll forget that idea then.

I would assume we're getting on for a couple of grand??

(Or is this the one and only fabulously cheap modification that gives 100hp for 100quid?)

Edited to say ..
Are the upgrade requirements you mentioned true for even minor turbo upgrades?

Was going to edit it and add IMHO as it looked dogmatic but I couldn't be ar$ed

If you do any turbo upgrade worth having you are dicing with problems if you keep the original fuel pump and don't monitor knock and boost.

I have yet to see anyone safely switch to a substantially different turbo without a custom remap or variants on this theme (by this I mean manipulating the physical setup of the car to do the same thing or move the det threshold).

Andy F's car you will note did not have an ECU initially, but all along he has kept the same exhaust housing, and has manipulated MAF readings, fuel pressure, breathing and intercooling to control it all.

People that just fit a big turbo on a standard ECU usually have an engine life measured in months, or they are not taking anything like full advantage of it. There is just way too much advance in the ignition maps to support it.

Exclamation

I would totally agree with John on this.
have had the same thing happen to my car recently - turbo blew, spewing oil smoke.
talked to Mark @ LP & a few people & decided that if I wasnt going to have a remap (only Phase1 for me ) then I would get a replacement TD04 & worry about making it bigger when I had the money, or if it went again!
so got a replacement low-ish mileage TD04 & got it fitted, all for £160. not bad considering the alternatives!

so unless your going full hog - just get it back on the road with a stnd turbo.

Steve
