When slowing down and trying to change into first gear, does it sometimes crunch and spit the gear out?

Or should it only be put into first when almost stationery?

Thumbs down

Never had that. Can be rather reluctant when cold. Works best if you go into 2nd first then pop into 1st just as you come to a standstill, say 5mph-ish.

Should'nt pop out of gear though. Could be the syncro is on it way out - thats not good!

probably no syncromesh on 1st gear if scoobs are like most other cars, thats why it crunches when you try and put it in 1st while moving.....................i think

Lightbulb

the only gear that doesn't have syncro is reverse, the other five have syncros, changed 1-3rd on mine due to said problems

you could also spend 30 quid on some Castrol Syntrax gearbox oil, works wonders for dodgy gearboxes

Also make sure that the carpet mats are'nt stopping the clutch pedal going right to the floor....it can make a difference - belive me!

It can be difficult to put a subaru into first gear when moving, if it is jumping back out of gear mean you probably bent your selector fork.

My MY00 has never liked first gear, I park in a multi-story car park every day and it is a right pain driving down the ramps when it is cold as I virtually have to stop to engage first. Otherwise I have to roll down in second with the clutch dipped. I think they all are like this to one extent or another - my first service that involved a gear box oil change made it a lot better though.
