Best dash position for knocklink module
#1
Just received my Knocklink and looking at potential mounting positions. The module is pretty ugly but without major surgury I guess I'm stuck with it.
My current favoured position is on the dash next to the A pillar boost guage. It actually fits in quite snugly between the dash and the windscreen but does encroach a little on the view.
Has anyone else come up with a better / tidier position that's still in eyeline ?
Cheers,
Andy.

Hi Nom,
So did you actually do this ? I haven't opened the box yet - is the circuit board small enough to mount in the A pillar or did you have to separate the LEDs ?
Cheers,
Andy.

Oo, hello
Err, no pictures at the moment Will try to do some - I actually stuck mine inside an 'aftermarket' A-pillar with room for 2 dials at the bottom as well, but from comparing the innards of the standard part & the aftermarket one, they both have the same amount of space ine there. It's a tight fit, though!

I was thinking of putting mine on the lefthand side of the steering column surround, mounted up against the dash with the LED end of the box uppermost (ie LEDs horizontal) and protruding enough to be seen quite easily whilst driving.
Mind you, fitting the LEDs into the A pillar would look cool

Spender, that's the same place I fixed mine in my RB5.
However since getting my STI UK I made up a home made unit which makes it easier to see while driving.
Cheers,
Rob.

Nice job Rob
Spender, I thought about that location as well but there's no flush surface is there ?
Nom, checked out the A pillar - it's really tight behind the standard one with a chunky wiring loom running up it as well. I'll probably stick with wedging on the dash and see if I can live with the ugly box !

Err, iffy photo being dark & all, but I think you get the idea
Loads of reflections & filth marks
There's the LambdaLink at the top (following up the a-pillar), KnockLink going across, then the two pods underneath - boost & EGTs on the top one, and the lower blocked one oil temp & pressure.
Wierd stuff the flash does - makes the car look light metallic green (which it isn't, by the way )

I'm gonna put the LEDs into the surround on the clocks (MY99). Shouldn't be too hard, right in the line of sight and I'm hoping the part ain't too dear to replace if/when the time comes

Paul...dunno about on yours, but on the legacy it's £130 to replace the dash frontage from a dealer.
Just FYI.
Nom...where did you get the digital gauges (and pods?)? Are they VDO? They are EXACTLY what I am looking for, as the legacy has no "Centre binnacle" to pop a load of defi's into.

From what I gather, all the dash bits are expensive.
Don't let it stop you drilling it, though, it just depends WHICH bit of dash you were planning to do?
The binnacle front (perspex + black bit) is only about £50 if you muck it up. Just be VERY careful of the instruments. My fuel gauge needle is broken, and, as I said, it's £130 odd to fix it.

The black bit that goes around the perspex (one with the three little slots cut for the internal temp sensor). I don't think this is attached to the perspex it's just a surround so in theory should be quite cheap. MY98-2000 dash (white dials with the large central gauge).

Not Strictly true, DeliciousSpeed....if you don't have ECU knock correction, and you get a bad batch of fuel, then you'll need to see those warning lights! All depends on how autonomous your cars setup is.
