I've read a lot of the previous posts on this subject and still can't decide. Is there a definitive answer to the question of lightened flywheels.
I have an MY94 with the PPP, so about 240-250ish BHP. I am having my clutch replaced today (standard Borg & Beck)and was told that i might need a replacement flywheel if mine has too many/bad highspots.
Is it worth getting a lightened flywheel with that power output (can't afford to do any power mods for a while) or should i stick to a standard flywheel.
If so, does anyone do an advance exchange unit (ie. i'll pay full price then get a refund on sending mine back) with next day delivery (tomorrow), or a standard flywheel for delivery tomorrow.
How much in each case please?

I think the lightened flywheel only means the car will rev quicker giving better throttle response and perhaps increase power slightly as less to spin etc.. but only very little amout..

you can get a standard flywheel from www.midland-impreza.co.uk for £80 (not sure if + VAT or not)... no idea on delivery and stuff.

I have also found somewhere that will do the Borg clutch kit for £73+VAT.... from Autospares (Sutton) Ltd 0115-9647600 and ask for Mail Order, postage is free!!


then mine stopped slipping so on borrowed time now as I thought it was shot... think I managed to glaze it.

Full details are:

Borg & Beck 3 Year Guarantee Clutch Kit : £72.63 + vat

My clutch searching ranged from £900+VAT for an AP Organic and lighten flywheel including fitting.. I just laughed..

Dealer wanted £629 including vat and I think that was with the flywheel

Another dealer estiamted £500+VAT but needed the chassis number

£350 fitted... just clutch.. two quotes for this.. one + VAT and one not..

£150 for clutch kit which is Midland Impreza again

as above...



Part of me thought perhaps it was a mistake but I have rechecked the email and I did ask for a Turbo clutch kit..

Thanks JGM, that was where mine came from.
I had exactly the same feelings about the price and triple checked that it was for a Turbo as well, unbelieveable price.

Didn't get a call yesterday, so keeping it all crossed that i don't need a replacement flywheel.

How many hours should it take to change a clutch?

I was told 4 or 5hours... obviously depends on whether they have done it before..

Panic over, i didn't need a flywheel in the end, but did get stung for £220 + VAT for installation of the clutch.
The guy told me that if i hadn't had aircon then they would have taken the engine out to do the job but they had to drop the gearbox and exhaust and remove the turbo and cowling instead.
Apparently this entailed removing lots of nice rusted in bolts that had never seen a spanner since the day it was built and of course all but 4 out of a dozen or so snapped off.
So lots of stud removal and retapping apparently.
Hey ho, lovely smooth, silent clutch now and i reckon getting 94,000 miles out of the first one wasn't too bad.

220... so if 30pounds an hour whats that 7 or 8 hours..
not bad I guess.. the Turbo heat shield and downpipe are a git!!!

As far as I can make out my clutch is still the original.. 120,000miles... but then one of the previous owns could have just failed to put the receipt in the history..
