Hi mate,
afetr having the p$ss ripped out of me by a few nameless people i just had too change the BB on my 4 week old P1. It had the standard STi BB and it was toooooooo quiet. Have owned an RB5 WRSport and although a nice sound, still a bit too quiet. Have just fitted a Scoobysport BB that i purchased from the For Sale forum. Well chuffed with the results, nice deep burble and relatively loud!!

I would suggest getting the facts right mate before you comment. And if it was restrictive, you know as well as I do, power alone does not make a car fast.

Mike, I had a PPP on my car on my car for six months. At 290 to 300 BHP and lbft, I felt the exhaust was holding things back. Mervyn said it sounded restrictive too.

On changing from the PPP centre section and backbox to Magnex I measured faster spool up, and had to reduce midrange duty cycles to reduce the boost peaks. After doing so I measured improved acceleration times, top end boost was also held better. I could not identify any areas across the range where I had lost out.

I also tested by swapping my PPP backbox for a Blitz Nurspec backbox. The difference was phenomenal in terms of performance, going from no overboost at all to a 2 PSI overboost with the same boost controller settings. It was blindingly obvious that the car was running better across the range even when the boost controller was turned down to equalise the boost.

Of the cars I have mapped, I have noted that cars with Prodrive systems are lovely and quiet, but there must be more exhaust back pressure because they do not spool up as well. In contrast I have seen some very frisky cars with 3" Japanese full systems, and some quick and free breathing Scoobysport systems in particular.

I would love to drive around with a Prodrive backbox because they are lovely and quiet, but I had to move on!

Whilst rolling roads are not good for comparing before/afters with the magnitude of improvements you get from exhausts, gains have been seen from swapping PPP centre/back to Magnex centre/back. Also further substantial gains from going from 2.5 to 3" on the same day.

I am a subscriber to the belief that zero backpressure behind the turbo is the goal. I base this on what I have seen of the various exhaust systems, and also a published test of exhausts with measured exhaust backpressure on a Legacy Turbo. There was no correlation between low down torque and EGBP, quite the opposite. I don't believe there is any pulse scavenging effect after the headers, if indeed there is that at all in a turbocharged car, but that is a separate debate.

The problem is that I don't suppose you can present your data that you have collected here, but only allude to it.

I don't doubt the Prodrive boxes are well researched, but they also need OEM approval. They are indeed lovely and quiet, if it wasn't restrictive according to my albeit ill-resourced testing I would still have it on my 380 BHP, 370 lbft steed.

I think you will find that the silencer you had on your car was designed for 240bhp pre 01MY car, not a 300bhp car. The later silencer is different and hence you will get a different characteristic from it. Hence my reply that you had made a sweeping statement without establishing that all your facts were correct.

Have you tried a P1, WRX or WRSport branded silencer?

Looks like you have also noticed a difference in boost levels by changing the rear silencer on it's own which is what you would expect if the car felt any faster. Strange that some people state that it has no effect on your warranty then!! The car is no longer running in the way it was designed to do.

Never had a Scoobysport BB but first ever mod to my MY99 was a Prodrive BB. I asked the guys on here for a comparison at the time. Feedback was that the Prodrive was quiter when driving conservativly but when given some throttle it roared were as the Scoobysport was loader full stop. Personally I wanted to remain inconspicious in towns etc but wind down the window on the open road and hear the exhaust. Have Scoobysport downpipe as well now and very happy with the setup ( well nearly. Scoobysport centre coming up! )

It will get louder and your turbo will spool up quicker and you will get slightly more power..

Why are you typing here, get out side and fit it!!

I think if you want as someone said a slight burble at higher rpm and quiet in town the the PPP BB is perfect but it is only the BB..
If you intend going further and changing down pipe and centre or want louder then the PPP BB is not for you etc..
It is better matched to that level of power, fit the downpipe too and centre and you exceed it's design criteria? imho...

JGM with a full Scoobysport system... now anyways..

I changed my PPP exhaust(my98) for a ScoobySport center and back box and got a massive 1bhp increase ...though i did also get an increase of 19lb/ft of torque so im not complaining.
The power figures were of different rolling roads so they could be out but im going back to the original rolling road this weekend to get a better comparison.
