I was driving my 93 WRX today when the following happened.
Driving into a built up area at 60mph. Slowed down for a set of traffic lights when the car starts to cough and splutter and vibrate badly. I pull over immediately and switch off the engine. Initial thoughts are coil pack/spark plug as there are no warning lights, no oil leaks around the engine plenty of oil and water (no signs of cross mixing). So I fired up the car again to see if anything had changed but it hadn't.
Most of the readings were normal. Oil pressure was 30 psi at tickover and water temps were normal. The odd one was the boost gauge which was fluctuatuing wildly. Not having any tools to do anything I called the AA and was relayed home, some 100 miles away. I have since tried to start the car and it will not.
Help! If anyone has any idea what may have happened please let me know.

I've seen this happen when the BOV has gone kaput. Air gets sucked into the inlet via the BOV when it shouldn't and causes all manner of running problems. Have you got a non std BOV?

would agree that it sound as tough it could be to do with induction etc.
have u checked all intercooler hoses for splits, could be faulty dv etc, know mine ran the same (93 wrx) when a hose from the intercooler wasnt connecting tightly and thus leaking air, it doesnt need to leak a lot of air to run like this,
do you have a boost gauge, and if so are you boost pressures down, which would make me think in abscence of other symptons, (smoke out exhaust etc) that it could be intercooler related.
