Knock Links....are they any good over a certain RPM ?
#1
Hi Guys,
I was thinking about getting a K/L when I get my car remmaped; however, I have heard that the factory knock sensor on the STI-7 shuts off above a certain RPM becuase the 'noise' becomes too much for the factory knock sensor to decifer engine noise and engine knocking.
Question is, can the aftermarket K/L decifer this noise during high rpms and are they worth it on the new JDM STI-7's ?
Cheers,
Ray

My KL only show serious knock if I hit the rev limiter at over 7000rpm, so I'd say it works up that high it should be OK
KL is always worth it in my opinion! Especially in a hot climate with a re-map

Ray - here's a 'graphical representation' of exactly the same thing that the KnockLink will show: yes, it gets noisier at higher rpm, but you know that so needn't worry about it.
At the noise level of my car, the KnockLink's bottom light comes on at around the '20' mark on the graph.
The ECU may reportedly ignore the noise higher up (too much background noise level - quite visible) & presumeably what it's looking out for anyway is the larger individual 'pings' such as the one at 4,500rpm on the graph - this wasn't knock, just a noisier bit, but is a smaller version of what knock actually 'looks' like. Very obvious with the KnockLink!
Hope that helps a little?
