Considering a lightened flywheel when the gearbox comes out.

Anyone knows the weight of the OE wrx sti Type R flywheel? Is it already a lightened item?

What is the best weight to geo for? 8.4kgs?

thanks

I was persuaded to have my fly wheel lightened by Scooby Sport. After the job was done they said it was 8.0>7.5kg as opposed to the original they said was over 12kg.
Subsequently for related issues I had to remove my transmission and found the flywheel was 9.2 kg.
I had found no benefit from the claimed lightening.
Since then I am advised by Bob Rawle that he has a special purpose built (billet alloy) flywheel from Roger Clark Motor Sport in the order of 6kg and he has experienced real gains in response. Steve Mc'Cullough has the same set up along with several others I believe so my next engine will follow this route.
I was previously concerned with going too light, removing damping from the engine and having erratic tick over which does not seemto be a problem. I have about 18k mls since the partial lightening by Scooby Sport but I am not sure as to the milage by Bob Steve and others on the ultra low 6kg???? set up.

thanks harvey,

so i assume u have an sti and the OE weight was approx 12kgs? i have the same concern as you but seems like most aftermarket weight are around 5.4kgs (eg the sti lightened flywheel, jun etc) but just the thought that there is a sti lightened version, why is it not on sti cars?

I was concerned about taking mine to a really light weight ie. less than 6 kg but as I see it at present my caution was unwarranted and as Bob has done a few miles with glowing reports so I guess I am going down that route.

I am also in the process of looking at a new clutch for my Type R.

Was thinking about the AP Organic, any one using one of these care to comment?

I am also unsure what to do with the flywheel? I am not out to achieve any thing but have been told the flywheel should be "faced off" when having clutch replaced?!?!

Main problem being I cant really have my car off the road for several days while I am waiting for the flywheel to be done!

How much is a new fly wheel? one which I can have put straight on when changing clutch. Is there any where that does them on exchange?

Just compairing weights can be very misleading. What determines a flywheels 'effectiveness' is were the weight is actually removed from. Removing the mass at a greater radius will lead to a far more pronounced effect. If your buying a billet one, have a look at it first...

Also, a lightened flywheel in a Type R would feel 'lighter' than the same wieght flywheel in a UK car due to the shorter ratios/final drive.

I have a Lateral Performance clutch (with a BPM flywheel), iirc its rated at 400lbs/ft? Drives very similar to the oem STI one.
