This is what 380 BHP and 363lbft does to third gear

Ooops, I had such a painful experience in the past... even with more reasonable hp figures for a stk gearbox.
As you post these pictures, I have a question about subject 3rd gear weaknesses : when we replaced it (on a MY01 WRX), I noticed the new one received from japan had a different syncro stop, in teeth profile instead of kind a washer.
Is there any difference between stock MY97-98, 99-00 and WRX on this point? (hopefully yes !)

just wondering if this could be why people are getting problems with third.
the top of the tape shows very roughly where I guess the oil level is,when on the higher level of the dip-stick.seems to me that the gear we get the most problem with is the one furthest from the oil and gets splashed more than bathed.

You'll be happy to know that mine looked identical to yours with circa 240bhp through it at the time
You could have a point though as it was 3rd one mine too
Do you suggest more oil than the indicated level ?

Sipie, I think its John Banks box. T-UK is Johns mechanic and John is T-UK's ECU guy....a perfect working relationship
What is john replacing it with. Another UK box and hope or something stronger?

I am basically doing standard 2.0 destruction testing or exciting power and torque figures whichever comes first, if I don't destroy it, then it is a bonus, going for the 2.5 anyway, if I trash the heads I'll get STi ones.

it is JB's box.I just have it as I do some spanner work for him,far from being a mechanic though, more the case that I have the tools and strength that doctors do not seem to have .
Si,
I am adding more oil to mine.probably clutching at straws but the manual says 4litres,the cars I have done take 3.5 and are on the max mark on the dip-stick.

Oil level is interesting...I do think the failure is a gearing vs gear strength issue. 1:st and 2:nd are beefier than 3:rd...
I think 4:th and 5:th are "stronger" due to gearing reasons.
This is a half built Lateral Performance box...WAY beefier than the OE gears, especially first 3 gears...

Sounds like some invaluable research John Great for scooby's all over.
T-UK, you are probably better than 90% of mechanics IMO because you are enthusiastic about cars in general. I find that only about 10% of the mechanics I've met are into cars; to most its just a job and when you are not enthusiastic about something its human nature IMO to give an inferior service. It's a bit like me really, I'm a planning officer but it doesn't really float my boat. I can do my job but I can't put that finishing touch of quality/class to it because that's the bit that comes from the heart. Hence, I'm looking to change

I could do that allan. I honestly believe I could pass my driving test tomorrow but I think I'd get frustraited in a job where i had to feed the steering, etc all the time

Kenny, you have'nt passed your driving test? LOL
I take it you mean the Instructors test.
Why do you honestly believe you could pass it? I bet you haven't had any training to do so, so how do you know what challenges are required to pass?
I sense a theme in your life, you think therefor you are.
OK, back on topic.
