As far as I can gather my STi7 JDM has a VF30.Whats the max BHP this can effectively deliver? Can I just bolt on a hybrid one like MD304 and then produce 340 BHP at 1.25 bar boost on my standard IC(after having Ecutek remapped) or is more involved? D'ont really want to go fmic due to cost.As I c'ant DIY,fmic inc fitting is going to cost a fortune and involves cutting bumper and extra lag.

Not sure about the VF30, who is if they don't have the compressor maps?

I had an MD304 with an uprated top mount and it was nowhere near as quick as with the FMIC as I could not run the boost with decent ignition timing to get really good power.

The issue with power is what boost you hold OVER 6000 RPM. Even 1.25 bar with a TMIC and a decent turbo is quite hot on the charge temperatures. Maybe with water injection you could do it? See what Mark/Pat/Bob think? Maybe some charge temperature monitoring would help you.... to go and buy a FMIC

Doesn't matter how efficient a turbo is, (and I would expect an MD304 to be about 70% or less at high revs but I admit I am guessing) you are still compressing the air (and so heating it) and rely on the intercooler to cool it down again.

I am unaware of any Subarus from the factory that have massive headroom for more power on their standard turbos. Arguably if they did they would be too big for the job and all the journos would complain about lag and boost threshold and the cars would not sell.

Some had the VF22, but it is brittle. The VF24/28/29 is not a long term candidate for big power. They put a VF23 in the 2.2. TD05 maybe an exception, but then it needs front entry it seems to really flow well?

I would say to go for the fmic first and see how you get on.the vf30 has iirc, quite a decent size compressor wheel in the smaller housing, shared with the vf24/28/29,so should be a pretty good all rounder.

I am guessing it will cost about a grand.I still think Subaru's biggest mistake was not fitting a front mount on the sti7.

most classic car owners are finding that after a remap, there are no lag issues.

I'm running a VF30 and a MRT TMIC.
And @1.3bar in temps above+20 deg C it's a bit dety..
I'm not so kind with the ADV though.

Now it's under -10deg C and no problem with running 1.5bar,
except for almost maxing out my injectors even with a rising Reg.
and a 0.87v lambda@6000rpm.

Next investment is a WI kit from Mark

Interested in the same question......but are you sure the VF30 IS the RHF55? The reason I ask is that based on the flow map, the VF30 peak flow is around 13 m^3/min, this is roughly 26ish lb/min which equals roughly 260/270 ish PS......however I`m running a VF30 at around the 320/330PS mark!!!!!!!

I know output temps from compressor are not outrageous at this level.....so is it really the RHF55 map?

Cheers!

Cool

Hmmm this might help as far as I.D.'ing the product but as for the flow maps I'm not sure I haven't bothered to learn the theory, can't be too hard maybe its time....
I'll check a couple of other links to see what I can find

Mark

no laughing at my site either

The VF-30 is a non-roller bearing beast otherwise known as an IHI RHF55 you can check out the specs and flow maps here....
http://www.gcg.com.au/home.htm

or the US IHI website here...

http://www.ihi-turbo.com/turbo_RHE-RHF.htm

regards Mark
the VF-34 uses roller bearings with same spec
