Hi All,

Picked up the new beast today, and my word does it pull!
Found a bit of a problem though when trying a fast 'getaway' (0-60 type of test)
Probably just cos Im not used to it yet, but experienced big raise in revs, a big jolt and nasty thud noise from engine bay between changes, so much so I thought the engine might fall out!

It is an STI 5 Type RA V-Ltd with the quick shift gearbox. Im sure its just me not being used to the clutch / gears yet and using a crap technique!
I really want to end up with a fast result, but without making my mounting bolts shear off in the process!

Could someone give me a lesson in using the quick shift box?!

Cheers
Mark...

Take it easy while changing the gear. I used to beat the synchros all the time too and this is not healthy. If you can, double clutch your way up. After several "bad experience" (3 times last year drenched in gearbox oil) I've learnt from my mistakes.

If you really want some fast gearchange, get yourself a dog box. You won't even need the clutch for it.

Take it slowly till you get used to it. Before long your changing will be in your 'muscle memory' and you'll be able to change quick and smooth without thinking about it.

The thud is the diffs complaining. There are two ways to cure this I've found:

1. Change slowly and more smoothly

2. If your wanting to change fast then only back to half (works with mines but experiment) throttle during the change and change real quick. When you get this right there is hardly any drop in acceleration and the diffs don't thud!! BUT, the reason they don't thud is cause the clutch spins a little when re-engaging (cause of the revs you're holding). This is NOT an everyday technique unless you like replacing clutches

Try driving in a 'progresive' manner, and not an 'aggresive one.
Works for me!

Mark, as you're coming from a slower car to the turbo you'll be used to banging through the gears to get the best from the slower car. You won't need to do this now, you'll have to slip the clutch or pause between changes to avoid transmission thump sessions.

Thumbs up

Cheers Guys,

Im actually coming from a 94WRX to this 99STI Type RA so Ive had the turbo experience before. It just seems very different changing up in this one!

Guess I'll just have to practice I suppose...
And I dont want tot break it!

BTW, Im certainly not going to be driving it like this all the time, its too nice! but you know what its like when youre tryin to show off a new car to mates etc!!

Cheers

Correction, gearbox will go first before the engine. Unless its an STI-V of course, then its a bet on which one will go first.
