I currently have an MY97 with 92k miles. The engine is sweet with no smoke, no oil consumption and some piston slap when cold which goes away completely when warm. I curently have a full decat, and Dawes at 1.1 bar. I'm thinking of getting an induction kit next, and probably leaving it at that.

How much has the above shortened my engine life? I'm hoping to keep the car for a few years yet. I don't do that much miliage, about 8k a year.

With those mods, especially the decat, engine life varies. I have heard more horror stories re de-cats then i care to remember due to the car running lean. Saying that, some cars last for quite a while. The only safe route to take is to have either an ECUTEK upgrade or another ecu to sort thefuelling out. You will probably find that the car will perform and feel a lot better after the remapp. My STI had a LINK upgrade and the torque is astounding compared to what it was. I highly recommend it.

Cheers

My car runs nice and rich according to my AFR, but I'm probably going to save for an ECU upgrade when I get my induction kit, just to be safe.

Hmm, what does piston slap sound like? Mines make a horrible metallic rattle when its stone cold and over 2k rpm but then it goes away. Is this slap or just normal groans from a cold engine?

Piston slap sounds a bit like a diesel engine, but not as loud. That's the best way I can describe it. Someone posted a soundclip a while back.

****, that probably how I'd best descibe this! Still I can aviod it by warming the car up correctly so on that basis I assume it isn't doing undue harm?

Mine goes away when warm also, this is the piston expanding with the heat, thus filling the bore better. I think if it goes away when warm it's not doing any harm, just take it steady when cold. But you obviously do that anyway
