Question

I have continued clutch judder on my P1. I had a new clutch about 7k miles ago (to replace the prev juddreing clutch). At first it was a joy, no shudder, nice smooth takeup. After about 1000 miles it started to judder. Now it is quite a PITA with judder esp when cold and a has a sharper and sharper bite.

Local dealer says that they are waiting for the latest clutch upgrade to fix this problem. I am not sure whether this will happen or not!

This may have been done before, but has anyone else had this and is it curable?

Thanks
Graham

Allegedly the "cure" is to do a full bore standing start. This will stop it juddering for a few hundred/thousand miles. Must stress that the judder on mine is so minor and only when cold that I have never bothered testing this theory myself.

Yep I tried this on the last clutch. It's a very short lived cure even when it has an effect. I'd rather get a solution while the car is still under warranty!!

Got exactly the same problem with my P1, on 10k now. Tried telling the dealer but they fobbed me off saying it's a new clutch and it needs bedding in. It happens without fail, first thing in the morning, every morning.

I've not heard anything about a fix, keep us informed!

I'll bed it in his head if he tells me that again

ahh yes, I had this one. Then the dealer made a few cockups on other things which we fell out over. Part of it was 'just change that f'ing clutch'! Which they did. They will do it again, but have told me there is a mod in the pipeline that they want to wait for. Guessing that I am being fobbed off, I have contacted Subaru UK cust services to ask them if that mod is on fact in the pipe!

No answer as yet...

revised clutches are yet again "in the pipeline", so have found out.
just a week or so away, test items are fitted and being tested .
I would definately make sure the garage fits a new flywheel at same time,or thatcan be cause of all problems, not advised to fit clutch without it.

Unhappy

Still waiting for my second replacement clutch, first started juddering at 16,000, second at 24,000 miles. The replacement has been agreed under warranty but lack of availability of the 'new kit' has meant six weeks of waiting so far and still no firm date for a fix.

Makes me wonder whether the improvements made to the parts weren't so successful in the trials or if there are so many outstanding claims the suppliers can't keep up!

Anyone actually had any success with the new kit?

Had mine changed (36,000 ) 2 weeks ago and it's worse now than ever before
I have to drive a little heavy footed to smooth it out, which is ok but sometimes i'm not in the mood and i doubt my neighbours think it's ok a 6:30 in the morning
I have let the dealer know just incase it knackers something else but they obviously can't fix the bloody thing so i figured why continue winding myself up listening to the frankly lame excuses

yep, that's where I am! I measure how bad it is by how many revs I need to pull off in the morning. On its own it's not the end of the world, but it must have a detrimental effect on exhaust, engine mounts ancillaries etc.

No word back from Subaru cust services yet though!

does the clutch judder only affect the newer (99 - 00) classics?

My MY96 suffered badly when I bought it, but since fitting a new clutch (Delphi borg & beck) (Not with a flywheel) it has been OK.

It came with a 3 yr guarantee as well

I read a thread somewhere in the technical section last week about adding extra earth leads from the battery - to the engine and body, to make your engine run better and smother as the standard earthing is inadequate. I did this and my clutch judder is suddenly almost non existand!!!! on my Catalunya.
For about £5 worth of cable and crimps it's worth a try chaps....

The earth mod DOES NOT cure clutch judder!

I have the earth mod (put on to stop an annyoing idle hunting problem). This was fitted before my old clutch gave out, and the car juddered very badly.

Suddenly after getting a new clutch (Not a Subaru item... and it was quite cheap) there is no judder at all. Could there be a connection here?

Do Subaru make their own clutches, or rebrand another maufacturers? If so, who?

If your engine is running better it will deliver smoother power to the clutch....which has to help clutch judder!!!!!!!!!does it not?
Only tring to help, the Standard earthing is not good enough so you have nothing to loose by trying it.

Old forester GLS did it at 12k miles, replaced under warranty, new forester S-turbo is starting to do it at around the same mileage. When the old one was replaced the dealer said that if it was burnt out then I'd have to pay for it, but it looked in really good nick. Oh, and it only took them just over 1/2 a day to do the job too!

FWIW, my MY01 2.5 Legacy (now sadly gone - p/x for my WRX) had terrible clutch judder, it was really bad when it had been in heavy traffic, eg Friday afternoons in London. It was changed with a modified new clutch under warranty and it sorted the problem. The garage said that all Subaru's had some judder which was down to that materials used these days for environmental reasons. They also said that the new clutch they fitted was the new design with changed fly wheel.

I have just been told by sub cust svcs that they have a new set of clutch parts to try on my P1. I'll report back when it has been done.

If your service is coming up, mention to your dealer now that you'd like your clutch replaced under warranty.
The dealer will probably want to keep your car overnight to experience the judder first hand when the car's cold in the morning.
This gives them time to submit a warranty claim and order the new clutch assembly in time for your service.

I had the revised assembly fitted a couple of months back under warranty. What a difference it's made

Cool

I also have this clutch judder problem on my P1. Replacement clutch sorted it out for some 2000 - 3000 miles, but now it is back again (and time to get it fixed once and for all)with next service due soon.

However, my experience is that it only ever happens in first gear from a cold start. I.e. if I pull away in second then it won't happen. Also, the best way I have found to stop it (cosmetic cover up) is to pull away with minimum revs and slowly let the clutch bite. If I use too many revs, then the judder will start, and I just ease back on the throttle slightly. It is actually quite difficult to stall even with low revs, and kinder on the transmission until the judder phase is over.

A pain in the neck, but that's it until the engine starts to warm.

Question

sorry to hijack this thread slightly but what is the general preference:
Helex or AP clutches ??

Any experiances ? Apparently all the group N racers are using Helex.

my P1 is due to go in next week. They say they are fitting a clutch kit for a current model WRX, so we'll see.

I find that lots of revs help to negate the judder.

The clutch judder is probably the release bearing. This could be like in the RS Fords - through the brearing center there is a alloy sleave which tends to wear out causing the problem.

Just had my P1's clutch replaced under warranty with 'an uprated competition' version, apparently only the second one fitted in the country and now to be standard fitment for the 'judderers'. It seems ok so far although the first few miles were a bit sharp on the take-up.

Can you let me have some details of the upgrade kit as my MY00 is going in Monday for the second time to have another standard juddery clutch fitted as the dealer told me no upgraded kit is now being offered.

Thanks, Jon

Yea,

Me too please as my car judders like a basteard from cold.
Only 30K on the clock, but it feels like it might shake itself apart until it warms up.

Must get this changed under warranty whilst I can.

James
