Isn't the compressor wheel prone to overspinning as well? Blades stretching & touching the housing & boom? Well, can't see a turbo going boom, quite... destroying itself, anyway

any version 5 wrx owners would have tried these.

any turbo can overspool if you dont know what you are doing.

I didn't think any were quite as spectacularly good at overspooling as this one though?

Try speaking to Grant or Dave at AWD Motorsport in Perth (00 44 1738 633336) as I believe Grant is running one of these on his car MY97 CAT)

I would only suggest a VF22 if you're re-doing your engine mapping / ecu at the same time. I have a VF23 on the STD ECU (PPP WRX) and have had about enough of the lag in every day driving - for track and weekends its great though... My TD04 gets me quicker through a gymkana though.

IMHO VF23/29 are perfect in terms of low down response, high revs less lag and reliability. VF22 are more prone to fail. Personally I prefer the 29 that spools faster and keeps all the way to the red line but depends from what mod everyone has in his car. My car w/29 and Maxim manifold is about the same with a friend's car w/23 and APS CAK. Neither of the two compared with the factory TD04, I know this first hand!

To some degree, lag is subjective. It's really a case of learning to get the best from what you have, and getting used to driving around the lag.

If your car is "laggy" below 3500rpm, then drop it down a gear, and keep it within the power band ! Even a TD04 will feel laggy, if you try and use it at 1500rpm !!!!

I agree with the comments relating to the VF22. Whilste it flows quite well, it's very laggy, compared to it's flow (compressor wheel design/ P20 exhaust housing) and they are also the weakest of the stock turbos.

Of the stock turbo's, the new VF30, and the Spec' C version VF34, flow very well, and spool up pretty quickly.

Pick a turbo based on what you want to acheive.

Mark.

Which Subaru had this turbo from factory?
What would be the recommended boost for this turbo?

Car is MY00, and at the moment I am running with a VF30 which does spool up quite well(as some of you wrote) but looses it at top end.
@4000 1.4 bars of boost but it cant hold it, it drops to about 1.0bars @7000

Regarding the VF 22
I will be runing a 2.2 stroker with 9:1 compression, so hopefully that will compensate for the lag low down.
GEMS ECU (with ALS)
FMIC
Mongoose
STI 6 speed gearbox

You need an uprated actuator...or one of the lovely hybrids from Lateralperformance.

There are two issues with maintaining bost at high rpm.

1) the actuator is too weak.

2) the stock intake pipe is very restrictive.

The VF30 should be fine holding 1.4bar at 7000rpm, but the stock actuator would need to be up rated.

Get rid of the horrible stock intake pipe, for either a custom made one, or something similar to the MRT version (not the Samco).

I had a TD 05 on for a while and that one held 1.4 bars fine it could even have taken more. But that one is really laggy down low. Is the actuator on the TD 05 different then?

One more thing I do have a pod filter on the car (MRT) if thats what you mean, or is it the intake manifold?

Cool

I have a VF30 turbo..and I have no problem what so ever holding 1.4bar@ 7000rpm..when I run a dawes earlier my problem was that @+6000rpm my boost increased from 1.25 bar to 1.35...

My problem is to keep the boost down @ high rpm

Now i have had tme to settle down to my VF22 hybrid from mark aigin(lateral performance) i am very pleased. At 1st you think it has more lag over the TD054 on a UK MY00, whcih in fairnes it does, but at 3000 rpm its running 0.5bar, which feels the same as 1bar on atd04 at 2800rpm. By 3400 its doing 1.0 bar and at 3600 its doing 1.3 bar, and holding to the redline.

Me very happy, 338 bhp and 313lbft says i am

Cool

I use the standard one....I even tried to just run the actuator spring pressure just to be sure... and then I only got ~8psi
I dont have any problem, with holding boost @ high rpm.

But I have a samco inlet pipe, and a pod filter... witch may make some differance...

That sounds impressive (hunlimo) has it been upgraded at all Dawes maybe? At 60K I was thinking that it might be worth sending mine down to Lateral for some TLC, what normally involved and whats a rough price??
