Red face

After reading other posts about the cost of having Downpipes fitted i wondered wether or not i have just been ripped off.

To supply and fit Magnex Downpipe £350

The labour alone was £100 + vat

Does this sound expensive????

Depends on the hourly rate I suppose. I've seen a DP changed in 45 minutes (which would make your charge expensive). On the other hand I've also seen it take in excess of 3 hours with sheared bolts on the manifold (in which case your charge is quite reasonable).

I took 5 hrs on one car, I'd have paid someone £100 to take the hassle away.....

Thumbs down

If the labour was 117 squid then your downpipe looks a tad expensive at 230 odd,i thought they were 180 all in.

You can get the equivalent from ScoobyExhausts (Hayward & Scott) for £280 including fitting & VAT, so £350 does seem a little steep compared to that. There price breaks down as: price for the down pipe is £175 + Vat & £70 + vat for fitting.

Took my garage, Pro Sports in Stockport, 3 hours just to get the old downpipe off. Despite this, they only charged me for 2 hours worth.

All depends on how long it took, and wether they quoted any figure before the job.

Some idiot in Japan rounded off all the bolts to the downpipe and basically overtightened it too. I was not happy and took almost a whole day trying to remove it.

On the other hand, I changed the whole exhaust in an evening after work, and still had time to eat, fit in a game of squash and take it for a quick test run. And it's the first time I've ever had a scooby in bits.

Bit of a lottery on the turbo-downpipe bolts, mine were fine, some people's haven't been.

If I remember correctly, the leaflet included with the magnex downpipes states that the time to change the down-pipe, when done by a Subaru trained technician, is 3 hours. Bearing in mind most dealers and after-market specialists will charge in excess of £50 per hour for labour, I don't think 100 sounds bad at all.

Last time I bought a Magnex downpipe i think it cost about £200.

Hope this helps.
