MAF?

Can anyone explain these things to me? I know it stands for Mass Air Flow but thats about it.
After reading a couple of threads on how fitting an induction kit (on post 99 model) can knacker these sensors up i became a little concerened as I drive an STi V5 with the HKS powerflow kit.
What are the symptoms of a knackered MAF, what damage can be done due to a knackered one etc..
