STi V5 Type R rear clunking noise

whenever i shift gears, especially at the lower gears, i get a clunk from the rear. Sounds like the rear diff.
Is this normal? What can I do to get rid of it?

I noticed this when i first got into an impreza and it was down to my driving style. Since then i have become more familiar with how to drive them smoother especially through the gears and hey presto the clunking dissapeared.
This is just my experiance. Anyone else?

On the type r specifically, someone has in the past suggested something to do with the wheel bearings.
Not encountered it myself, but a change in load can cause this noise.
It is possible that the central but on the half shaft was not done up properly. I am clutching at straws here, btu hopefully someone will remember the exact content of the post.

This topic has appeared before and the general concensus of Type R owners was that we all had it.
Mine is very very noticeable if I slow down to a coasting spead in a higher than required gear. The rear makes major clunking noises.
I presume its just the backlash for the box / diff.........
I just put it down to road going rally cars not meant to be pretty!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sounds like nonsense to me.
Have had a type r for well over two years, and have not had this problem.
Nor has chuck or anders, or james etc.
Ask JF, he has the same drivetrain as you also.
I certainly wouldnt just accept it. Am sure it is something to do with the hub not being tight enough.

I also have a Type R and I have also noticed a clunking noise.
Bit strange as I can go over bumps etc and it wont do it but if I am pulling up to a junction or something and am coasting very slowly, just moving, I can hear it then.
At first thought it was the jack in the boot but doesn't seem to be the case!
If your talking about a thud noise when you boot it in 1st gear then change, this also seems to be a known "issue" but not only with the type R. As said before driving style can be a factor.

Yep I get this too on my Type R. The clunk only happens when I am changing gear "aggresively". I also thought this was a big problem as it sounds like the transmission is moving around and hitting the bottom of the car sometimes but after long conversations I am know convinced that this is a normal trait on Type R's and in fact most performance 4WD cars.
Two other people I know with Type R's also report this and a few people with Evo's and GT4's etc that I know have also experienced the same thing. The general consensus was that this was a natural side effect off the diffs trying to transmit all that power to the wheels. That fact that you usually don't get any wheelspin in a 4WD, just loads of traction probably amplifies the problem. The wheels don't want to break traction and all that power has to go somewhere so something has to move. I am not sure if the noise comes from the rear diff or the transmission.
However a slight change in the way you drive eliminates this trait completely. I have found that if I alter my gear shifts just slightly buy using my clutch a little bit more and engaging gears smoothly the sound disappears.
I might off course be talking b*****ks and some of the more technically minded people on here will have there own theories but I've found a slight adjustment in driving style which soon becomes second nature sorts this out. I no longer get the thunk at all.

I get the clunk on my legacy turbo!!!
But only when I scream into gear 'giving it some beans' or on an aggressive change-down.
I have tried to change my drving style...bu I can't.

It's quite easy to get rid of the clunk. Just ride\slip the clutch for a fraction of a second longer and feed in the gas just slightly smoother and it will disappear completely. Pretty soon this becmoes second nature. I have only experienced the clunk again once or twice after I learnt this new technique and that was only cos I wanted to as I was "really" giving it some
