Question

Could potentially be a lively question this one

Sti4 or STi5, whats the pro's and con's on having one or t'other

Reading back through loads of old posts seems a fair few STi4's and 5's have had engine rebuilds, is the cause normally thought to be detting lower octaine fuel than the Jap car's?, do as many cars in Japan need rebuilds?

Is one more prone to giving up than the other?

I've heard many people say if you run an import only run it on 98 fuel and add drop of octain boost to every tank. Am I right in thinking that decatting and induction kits on imports make the matter worse, if running the standard ECU of course

I'm learning alot about import cars this last week, had my eyes blinkered by my UK car too long by the looks

Glad you like it, I know I did

The general opinion is about a tank of fuel I think, make sure its optimax
As I said before, for maximum effect, get a boost gauge fitted and get hold of a dawes device, you'll be safe running this map to 1.25bar held boost (maybe an idea to get an AFR or knock sensor to be safe) You'll also find it'll spool up smoooooth

Missing my car already

Hi mate - not sure about you Q, but bear in mind the STi5 has the Delta Dashable and mappable ECU whereas I don't think the 4 does as its MY97/98...

STi Vs have stronger cranks, as all phase II engines, well, not stronger cranks per se, but better located thrust bearing and larger crank journals.

The failures are typically ECU/Map related due to low quality fuel or poor remaps (mmm - it might get lively now!, or not )

Ive also heard of an awful lot more V4's doing big ends, than any other model. The Ph2 May have a better designed crank...but the old one was never a problem anyway. Ive had a MY00 STI 5 Estate apart, and it did not have forged pistons. It was an auto tho, if that makes any difference??

Stevie,

I have heard of modded V4s having a problem with the cranks. Also the auto/wagons tend to have less power. Can't say why - must be a Jap thing. Even the Sti 7 wagon only comes with normal four pots - not the Brembos - different thing I know...

I never said there was a problem with them, just Ive heard of an awful lot of them doing big ends. Ive probably only heard of more STI V4's going, because I keep getting their forged pistons for other engines....lol
