My MY99 Turbo has been idleing very rough, drinking loads of optimax and have seen a drop in performance. Has been suggested that car was in "safe mode" and dealer said that even though no errors had appeared on Select Monitor they thought the air flow meter had gone and was causing the problem so gave them £100 and they replaced it.
Still got problems. Booked back in but anyone got any ideas...

His car was using loads of petrol, and was not idling well...
Increased fuel consumtion can be related to a broken o2 sensor, and poor idle control...
See here:
http://www.bondauto.com/templates/sc...?article_id=20
What Can Go Wrong:
"The result is poor driveability, manifested by one or more of the following symptoms: decreased fuel economy, hesitation on acceleration, stalling, surging, rough idle, and increased tailpipe emissions (with a likely failure of emissions tests, where mandated)."

I had this on MY 99, they won't see it on the Select unless they are very switched on. Mine had the same symptoms. Replaced the O2 and after a few days it sorted itself. Fit a new one and ECU reset.

dhorwich, thanks for the explanation
I see that it goes into the exhaust right near the turbo, thought I would go have a look as I am trying to learn a bit.

Thanks for all the help guys.
Going in tomorrow morning so will ask them about the O2 sensor.
I did have the 02 sensor replaced about 5 months ago. Looks like this is going to be a regular expense

'1,000,000 to one long shot' but could be 'throttle position sensor'.
Had same problem with mine ater MAF sensor replaced and O2 sensor replaced. Stil idled between 200 and 1000rpm but was constantly searching so took the car for a long (70 mile) drive with as much driving as possible being done at very low revs in 5th gear to help help the ECU readjust to what was going on....
Sorted the prob completely
