Prodrive WR, Magnex, Scoobysport Back box - WHICH?
#1
Which do I choose, I want nice noise but not too obtrusive when motorway cruising (mustn't keep the nipper awake!).
Long life is important, the original has lasted 5 yrs, no sign of needing rerplacement (apart from boring sound), want same from new box.
Help!

Hi mate!
The SS is quiet loud - as you heard at Bracknell meet both scott and I have them, think you followed us back to the A322? after, so thats what an SS sounds like, long journeys it could get a bit much...
I had the Magnex before the SS and it was a much more refined exhaust - nice note on throttle but very VERY good on the motorway. J (ScoobySnack) has a Magnex, his was the silver MY00 with P1 wheels - perhaps you heard him driving away?
I doubt this would wake the nipper IMHO the Magnex looks better build quality too and comes with a lifetime guarantee against SS's 25 years (like it makes a diff )
Haven't had the WR myself but seems a bit quieter and possibly more restrictive than the other two.
However - I got a SS because the missus wanted more noise
Hope that helps If in doubt wait until the next Bracknell meet and have a proper listen.....
Cheers
Neil.

Thanks Neil, Steve from the meet (same table as me) has a WR for sale so he is bringing it over for me to look at, was yours a 6x4" oval Magnex or a 3.5" round?
When you say the WR is more restrictive, thats more than a Magnex or SS, not the original box right?
Craig.

Nick, I am in Bracknell and have a Standard MY97 Catalunya (as the nickname suggests) except for 16" silver wheels (98 style).
Were you at the Bracknell meet?
Thanks for the threads, pretty interesting reading, I am seriously considering taking Steve's WR cos I can try it out without too much outlay.

Magnex or scorpion would be your best choice for noise on high revs but no bother for little ears at others. Got a scorpion for sale at the mo if you are interested ..

I had a magnex for 18months without problem, just changed it to a new scorpion to change the sound to match a dp better.

Craig,
mine was a 3.5" round - I think the oval is slightly more noisey, plus I didn't like the look
Yep the WR is better than the OEM exhaust AFAIK but the Magnex and SS are a bit less restrictive from what I understand........
Cheers

Can anyone tell me why some people seem to labouring under the misconception that the WRsport silencer is in any way restrictive compared to other silencers? A lack of noise does not necessarily mean the silencer is in any way restrictive.
To help clear things up, I'd like to make the following points;-
The silencer fitted to pre 01MY PPP is different internally to both the WRSport and P1 silencers, predominantly to keep noise levels reasonable.
The silencers for 01MY are different again, hence opinions based on earlier cars are not necessarily valid for later cars. The WRSport and PPP silencers are almost identical internally, the tailpipe being the only real difference.
To answer your original question though, the WRSport silencer is fairly muted at cruise and not too dramatic on boost.
Regards
Mike

The Prodrive WRSport sounds lovely on my MY02 WRX STI.
Much less restrictive than the OEM and improves the pick up from low RPM. Sounds great too, but not intrusive.
Couldn't wait for the PPP, had to give the car it's burble back!

Never mind the backbox bollocks,
Where's the STi springs Mike ?!!?!!?!!?
Let me endurance test the damn things, my STi7 is clocking up 800 miles a week, would be quicker for me to do it than you lot nipping to the shops and back

Replace my standard STi7 B/Box with a Magnex 6"x4" oval may not go any faster but sounds soooooooo much better
Tony
Ps. had the same Xhorst on my old MY99 I reckon at least 15% louder probably due to the extra 50 Bhp of the STi. with PPP would be far toooooooo loud

Just got True Grip through the door and if you read the Artical ...Worcester Rolling road day my old standard STi7 B/Box gets a mention
I took it off and got the Plasma cutter operated on it like a tin of sardines Then got the TIG welder and some silver paint I did improve the sound but only lost 19 Bhp so will agree with Mike noise doen't equal power but at least it sounded like a Scoob
Going down the motorway I was nick-name the Confetti Thrower (flakey Paint)
Was going to try Part Deux or get it repaired under warrenty LOL
Saved time effort and leaks bought a Magnex
