Whining Gearbox - Change oil no difference
#1
All..
The box is whining, especially when not on power or is freewheeling, so I've changed the 'box oil for Syntrax... The old oil was black and smelt really bad.. A small amount of very fine metal particles on the magnetic 'box plug.
4 litres of Syntrax later, and no difference - could this be a front diff problem - where does the front diff get its oil from ??

dont know if this will help but had the gearbox on my twin turbo rebuilt. It had the same symptons as yours. Turned out to be a number of the bearings in the gear box and centre diff were shagged. Mechanic said syntrax was good but not for scoobys. Apparently u need to use special oil because of the diff. I think he called it a hypoid gear(dodgy spelling)He used some synthetic valvoline stuff designed for these hypoid gears. hope this helps

Most gear oils are hypoid, and Syntrax is the one reccomended for subarus, by Subaru Technical, and everyone else who has used it.
My front crownwheel and pinion went, which caused a whining, but I was using a fully synthetic oil at the time, which, however unlikely may have been the cause,as it had covered over 100,000 miles before that with no probs, before I got the car. It went only a few thousand miles after I changed the oil
Unless I heard a reliable reccomendation by someone else, I would ONLY use Castrol Syntrax, or Castrol SMX

Syntrax is NOT fully synthetic, and most people seem to say that subarus do not like fully synthetic gear oils as they are too 'slippy' and may cause crunching into gear.
Ive tried 2 different fully synthetic oils, in 2 different cars, and quickly changed back to Syntrax.
