I have had 3 people ask me today if my car is broken
That dammed squeal must be even louder outside the cabin.
One person thought something had dropped off his car and was scraping along the ground
So what the **** is it.
From inside the cabin and a little technical know all sounds to me like the wastegate is perhaps only partially open and not ridding it's self of excess boost. (the air trying to scream through a small gap).
Rolling Road said it was boosting fine (1 Bar) although boost control wasn't brilliant (no explanation futher than this)
so that rules that out.
I have had the intercooler off and checked all the hoses were on properly and tight.
It's been doing it for over a month so obviosly not terminal.
No other scoob I have heard sounds like this.
Snowcrash and turboteeth have heard it on full chat
Perhaps you two could give a better explanation of what it sounds like !!!
Andy

Is it a high pitch scream, almost like a whistle?
Can you desribe it? Can you describe where it is coming from?
Its just i have heard a few tractors screem under hard revs, and IIRC the bearings on the turbo had gone.
I maybe wrong, wait for one of the techies to come along, they will know.

Fuzz,
Don't know what exhaust system you have but have heard a simialr type noise on a few cars that have melted their CATs. i.e. the noise you hear is indeed exhaust gases trying to get out.
The Alternative is with some twin dump down pipes where the flange between the two pipes can affect the opening of the wastegate fully at high exhaust gas flow rates.
But I guess the easiest answer would be you to say what system you have/car etc.
Cheers
Ian

Of course, silly me
PPP back box and centre section, 00MY (W)
Single pipe , Catless downpipe (bout 3") maybe scoobysport but was fitted before I owned her and no name stamped anywhere on it.
If the bearings had gone would it not have "shot it's load" by now as said it's done it for over a month and I have thrashed the **** off it a lot havn't I snow
*** on Snow and turbo Give us your opinion of the noise from the outside
To answer other questions,
Not recently fitted full de-cat
yes it is high pitched and sort of sounds like a whistle but a lot more forceful.
It sounds like it's coming from engine bay, not further up the exhaust,
floor it and you get the rort as the turbo winds up but then the scream starts as you approach full boost (assumed full boost as no boost guage on car yet)

Fuzz,
I would get it on the rollers at Powerstation for a quick full boost run to see if they could ID the sound as you are super local. Much easier to do it on the rollers than hanging out of the window while driving
But as you have a full decat I'm thinking you have a restriction of some sort. Maybe a 3 inch pipe down to a 2.5 or 2 inch at some point in the system ? Could the back box internals be coming apart ? Maybe even a crack in the exhaust manifolds (unlikely at this age) ?
Cheers

I was at Powerstation on Monday this week see, http://www.scoobynet.co.uk/bbs/threa...hreadid=123562
she was on the rollers and pushed out only 220 bhp, as mentioned earlier boost was holding well at 1 BAR but it was said control wasn't as quite as good as it should have been, no explanation about noise did not seem interested when asked (not got a problem with this, at least they were honest).
as a result I'm off to Listers in Worcester first thing on Sat morn to see what they come up with.
rushed over there after work today, to find all the mechanics stood outside looking at their watches as it was 5:29
Oh well at least the drive over there was fun (A38)

basically it was loud, we were both on full WoT up every gear, fuzz was pulling away (basically i have the same car without PPP+PPPHandling+BumpSteer+UpratedBrakes+UpratedSus pension - i was 3 up and therefore fizz was just moving away and above the sound of my noisy as **** car - i have full decat, dawes, itgFilter) and all i can hear is his monstrosoty sounding like a washing machine on E tablets you get from your local dealer....
it was a high pitched "WIIshhhhhhhhhhhhtTtttt", v.noisy i have to say, Turbo can do a good impression of it. maybe we can get him to do the impression and record it and upload it. or maybe fuzz can just record it and upload it

IWatkins,
yep A38, hoping to crawl out of bed early enough, they suggested I be there at 08:30.
Snow,
no camcorder I'm afraid, the last one I had flooded at 38m
uninsured

This sound was common from the Prodrive backboxes fitted in 1999. Not sure if the design has been changed, but they do sound like a jet engine at high revs and full power.

Yep, Returned from Listers of Worcester and everything was said to be normal.
I do like the sound, was just worried that somthing was not right, that's all
two technicians took it for a spin with me hanging out of the passenger window and yes it does come from the backbox, from the drivers seat I was sure it was under bonnet related but there ya go.
ordered a straight through cetre section while I was there oh and some new PIAA bulbs.
That A38 is a cracker by the way,
I think I have found my supplier for all my scooby related bits.
Very helpful and no charge... Top blokes.
