It is not cheating. It is a decent way of getting pretty damn good boost control. I have even used it instead of ECU boost control even when I can remap the boost using the ECU as it has some advantages. I use it on my own car. It is the most robust method of boost control I have tried. You are relying on the original ECU's fuel and ignition, which although conservative there is not a lot wrong with.

Get a Knocklink and an AFR gauge, and a boost gauge if you don't already and setup carefully (or get someone that knows how to to do it for you).

Ways of increasing torque:
- increase boost (with fuel to suit, of course)
- increase capacity ("stroker kit")

Small gains can be had from cold air supply, water injection and ECU fine tuning (once you run the max boost the turbo can deliver).
