i bought a quick shift from japinnovasions, tried to fit it but it just wasnt going on.
the selecter rod was jammed against the chassis
i email jap innovasions
and he said i have to bend the chassis up slightly.
no way, i tried bending it up a bit and still it was tight up there and really hard to shift gears
recently took a quick shift stick off my mates sti, its slightly different but all the measurments are same. so im not gunna bother putting it on as i know it will be the same problem.
need to send this jap innov' one back. if he will reply to my emils
any1 have a pic of a quick shift that they have on their my93 wrx ??
then i can compare them with the ones i have
thanks
dave

Can you compare both original lever and new lever to see the differences?
The bracket on the lever is only about 1/2" difference in position so shouldn't have any problems with clearance on the car.
The only thing i'm not sure of though, is differences in tunnel between the model years if any.

the STi 5 quickshift on the left and the one from jap innov' on the right.
both look to be the same measurments in all respects.

You say the one on the left is from an STI5 but the lever from the later cars(after MY97 is different) Does your std lever look like the ones in the picture?
All that changes is the pivot point on the lever. (The distance between the pivot and the ball is lengthened slightly!!)

I mean put that gear lever vertically in a press where it is held firmly and then press the ball thinggy (that round thing at the top) down by pressing on its sides (not on top, that would lower the whole gear lever). This will act as a short shift, or should (it's like that on other cars and shouldnt differ much on yours).

Claudius,
The ball has a roll pin though it!! So all you need to do is drill a hole further up the lever and move it up, then chop off the bit that now sticks out below the ball. This should shorten the throw but will also shorten the lever!!
Usually you move the pivot point (the bracket halfway up). This means the lever stays the same length but the throw is reduced!!!
That's how the Jap inov annd STI levers work

As I said, not sure about this particular model...
You should be able to tell what to move by looking at the OEM and shorter version. And then modify your OEM and send the short shift back

You would need to compare your std lever with the Jap/STI one and work out why the lever was hitting the chassis and cut it to fit round the problem.
I've not done this! I bought a Jap Inov one for my 97 (different style to yours).

I though you where supposed to leave the ball at the end and remove the point where the pivot is... in this case the metal part with two sides to it just under half way up the shifter.... you remove this say with a grinder then move it up the shifter slightly and re-weld it....
I think dave wallis covered this somewhere in his FMIC projects thread....
DAVE26,
From the pic it shows that they have sent you the quick shift for the newer cars.... as the older ones are different... ie your jap innovations one is the same as the sti 5 one which is a newer model

as far as i am aware the difference between pre 96 levers and later ones,is the way they are connected to the selector shaft.
where,on the early lever you have the "fork"attachment.
later versions have that bit on the selector shaft...ie the fittings are reversed.
based upon my trials and tribulations after being sent a wrong quickshift

just a suggestion.
I've fitted a quiksshift to a 00 scooby. I dont if your car has the same chassis but under the console that you have to remove to loosen the bolt that holds the selector shaft, there is a small square mat (probably sound proofing), remove this and you will see a rectangle bracket screwed to the floor, this bracket in the 'Chassis' that your meeting, I bet it is restricting selection of 1st and 3rd. if so take of this plate and get out your file and start filing. keep filing til the bracket is clearing the bracket. This is what I had to do....
And afterall that I've concidered moving the ball aswell to lengthen the thro a small bit and hope it wouldnt be as stiff, but I've got used to it know.
Hope its some help

I had to remove a fair amount of metal to get it to clear the selector. As you siad it doesnt work I go for moving the ball up ( towards the U bracket) Which inturn lowers the height that the selector has to raise to meet your new gear stick
Best of luck
