Question

I want to flush my cooling system with a hose pipe before replacing the coolant. Clearly, the thermostat needs removing first. Does this sound like a good idea and last but not least, where is the thermostat?

The thermostat is located at the bottom of the engine...
If you follow the bottom rad hose.. it goes to the thermostat housing. Two 10mm bolts hold the housing on and the thermostat just comes out after the housing is removed.
