Question

Hi
Currently my MY00/PPP Impreza has a Magnex twin dump downpipe, PE exhaust manifold and the rest of the PPP exhaust system.
Soon I am going to fit my new Walbro 255HP fuel pump and think about a new VF series turbo with a TEK3 remap in order to contribute all the above without problems.
I'd prefer mostly the lown down torque (from 2500>5500 rpms) and driveability more than the ultimate top-up power, as I never use my car above 5500-6000 rpms and I drive it always on B Roads, and the safety for my engine with a bigger turbo - lower intake temperatures.
I am thinking of a VF28-29 but I am not sure which one and why the one is better than the other.
So, my question is what turbo should I go for? Are both direct replacements to my factory MHI TD04 and which is the main difference between them?

I gather the 24 and the 28 are virtually identical. From what you say about how you drive it sounds like the VF23 would be a bit too big. Don't know much about the VF29 - see the MRT site for a PDF with all the specs. Depends on local availability also - I don't think you'd go wrong with a 24,28 or 29. Note with your manifold they will spool up later and be a bit better at the top end, so it makes sense not to go too big with what you have said. I have a hyrbid which apparently out-flows a VF22 with less lag and lower boost threshold than a VF23, and with a manifold there is not a lot below 3000 RPM at all, and hell does not break loose until 4000 RPM. It is easy to be caught in the wrong gear unless you change your driving style. With a new turbo you may become a 5000-7000 RPM junkie like me though With the TD04L it was a bit like redlining a transit van in comparison, you know where you are leaning forward at high revs because the g force is just dropping

Cool

John,

I have sent Jim the PDF file by e mail just now.

One other thing to remember is that when your flat out in 1st 2nd 3rd and 4th gear, from what I've seen revs don't drop below 5500rpm so you need power up top too.

Cheers,

Wrexy.

Thanks for the info, I had this file in my favourites.
So, if VF24-28-29 are the same (although I found that VF29 has a better blade design and comes on full boost at 2900rpm with standard parts) I would prefer the cheaper one, George you know what I mean!
And agree with the comment about the manifold as only the downpipe gave me back some of the stolen low down torque I had before with only the PPP. Except the power from the new turbo I expect a cooler and more dense intake air (more flow/time), which means reliability for my engine regarding our very hot weather, or better should I buy an uprated I/cooler?
At least the combination of exhaust manifold/downpipe (lower EGT) bigger turbo and new map should not be a strain for the engine or am I wrong?
I can prove this from my Delta Dash log files and my knocklink sensor where before I had 0 > -4 knock correction, now always 0 even with 35+ Celsius degree!
JIM

PS:Forgot to ask you could I use the same exhaust gaskets when fitting the new turbo?

RICHARD...
I'll send you some Delta Dash log files, first only with PPP - next with PPP+PE exhaust manifold - next with PPP+PE/ex.manifold+Magnex downpipe, if you have Delta Dash software, and you'll see that my car now flies(!) BUT the effect from the manifold was about the same with your car!

STELIOS...
You know me, I like torque

Cheers

Hi.
i have a VF29-link ecu and a complete decat and i get full boost 1,2bar at 3000rpm.
I just ordered a supersprint manifold+uppipe so i look forward to see how much longer it will take to spool!.
You will really quick get to know that it´s much more fun with a bigger turbo!.

Question

Well, only VF28 is available soon, could someone please tell me why not to buy a 28 or why it is worse than the 29?

Hi Jim,

Did your knock correction go away after fitting the manifold? Mine too

How did the PE manifold work with the PPP - where in the rev range did you start building boost, and when do you hit max? I've heard various reports of boost threshold dropping with this manifold, but guess it doesn't apply to the OE turbo!?

I run manifold (not PE, local unequal length design), vf23 and decat - I don't get target boost now until 3500 (a full 1000rpm higher than td04 and OE manifold!), but the car charges to the redline.

For the first few weeks I considered going back, but now just burn more fuel, much more As suggested, it's addictive.

Richard
Edited to add: buy new gaskets!
