if you can get the rear diff to match it would be best, that way you can be certain the final drive ratio is the same.
you thinking sell it and get an unbreakable gear kit???

David, you might want to do a search on I-Club in the transmision section. There were a few threads about this (as an alternative to dog boxes etc). It is possible, but involves quite a few bits (driveshaft, propshaft, rear diff IIRC).
There is even a company marketing this "mod" in the US for a mere 10K UKP
My dealer is considering doing the same thing for his own little "project" car (MY97). He is formal it is possible.

mrt also do a helical (but straighter than standard) gearset with dog engagement, i think they also do an uprated helical set with synchro.
the noise of the unbreakable set comes mostly from the straight cut teeth. I think it's cheaper too.
Also ask Mark A about some alternative gearsets which are less than half the cost of the MRT unbreakable set.

It would be interesting to know the amount of modifications needed to fit one of this gearboxes onto a GC8, like if the stock GC8 front cross member will work, and also if it can work with the "old" centre and fron diff .....

The box is a lovely unit, the ratio’s in the UK ones are better for dragging (and road use too – in my opinion) 6th on the UK car is 24.5 mph per 1000 rpm, the RA is 22.4 mph per 1000 rpm. 1 – 4 are identical on all the boxes. There are also different part numbers depending on the type of front and centre diff, two front options, and three centres.
As for the value question, each has to answer that themselves, it’s true that it’s a lot of money but it’s very strong with very good shifting, in a GC8 it will last well even with silly power due to the lighter weight of the car.

(dont really want to start replacing hubs..)

have a look at http://forums.i-club.com/forums/show...ght=6speed+gc8
I was under the impression that there were no differences between track widths on the wagon and saloon, or is this just the my00+
Also can anybody confirm if my front driveshafts would fit as they are... looks like I can keep the clutch I have...

The box is physically a lot bigger. I do believe after measuring, that the front shafts wont be a problem with the classic ones being useable with no mods. Just make sure you get the output stubs off the 6spd shafts to put into the diff, to fit your 5spd shafts onto. No reason to use the 6sp flywheel and clutch, but it is quite different to normal imprezas. Starter is in the same position. Mounting cradle also looks to be identical. Gear linkage would be required complete with teh 6sp as it is different to the 5sp.
AFAIK the 6sp is a 3.9 front diff, with a 1:1 transfer, requiring a 3.9 rear diff also.
