Any ideas ??? (99,FsSH)
- no oil loss, no coolant loss, not overheated but definitely very sick - sudden not gradual onset.
V.Worried and visiting the dealer asap.
Your ideas on what's happened please.

Im only guessing as everyone else will be but that sounds very very similar to my problem I had when the engine let go. Numer 3 went on mine although you sound like you have a UK car. I have a import so had to get the car done privately. Hopefully you will have a warranty. Sorry to hear

Yes - UK 99MY, Subaru extended warranty , recently serviced.
When you say no.3 went on yours, is this 'common' on Subarus; and what is the cause / effect ? (ie what bits are normally needed to repair - are we talking serious rebuild)
Any advice welcome. Thanks

just out of interest, have you checked the bracket that holds the alarm to the body? We had annoying rattle and discovered that the bracket had sheared in half and the alarm was hanging off on its cable! Now it is fixed and now more rattles

It's definitely something major mechanical in the engine itself - sounds serious enough to be big end (I'm no expert)
What are the symptoms of piston failure / cure /cost ?
Doesn't seem to have lost any oil

Er, engine rebuild if mr piston has let go. Best get it in now for a look, and drive it real slow for now.
It will be covered by the extended warranty, I think.

Not certain on costs, my engine rebuild was under warranty (due to a poor engine casting, this I was told is very rare) but it took four days to do the work. Not sure what hourly rate, though. Or how much a short engine costs.

Bad luck if it is the engine and good thing you've got the extended warranty. Just debating whether to extend my warranty (MY99 also). Think you might just have tipped the balance in favour. Did you go for 1 year or more ?
Just how often do the engines go like this ? Anyone got any thoughts ?

My MY96 experianced this with the previous owner in 2000 which resulted in a new short motor and a bill for over £2k which he had to fork out for himself!!. The spooky thing was that it too had just been recently serviced by the subaru dealer. Hope you get it sorted.
