Question

I had the inlet pipe to my turbo off the other day (TD05 front entry) and noticed a 'tiny' chip (probably about the size of a grain of sugar) on one of the leading edges of the compressor wheel.

As these things are very finely balanced, will continuing to run it cause a problem ? Is it likely to fail or just wear the bearings slightly faster ?

Also does anyone know where I can buy an 18G compressor wheel and service kit in the UK ? Plenty available in the USA but I would like to avoid the postage if possible

Andy,

Any damage to the compressor blades could lead to one letting go big time, especially with the boost you run.

I'm only guessing, but I suspect that you would need the matching cover, to suit the 18g wheel. I'll ask tomorrow.

Mark.

Thumbs up

Thanks Mark

Kinda what I suspected, I have a spare unit which I can fit just now.
I have a contact who can match the housing to the bigger compressor wheel, he has a machine which scans the surface then creates a mirror image to machine the matching part (+ clearance)

Then all I should need is a proper balance job.

A good lathe operator, should be able to match the profile. I had Turbo Dynamics make me a turbo, for my mini some time ago. They had to reprofile the metro turbo compressor housing to suit the cossie compressor wheel. This was way back in the early 90's, when the impreza was only born....
