Car is having the front crank seal replaced.

So the cam belt comes off for the job.. do I put a new one on or the old one back on?

current cam belt has done 15,000miles, so has 30,000miles left until it is due to be changed.

Cannot see that taking it off and putting it back on is going to stress it?

If I change it then the service intervals are then going to be confusing and will no doubt result in the belt being changed early later on in the life of the car.

Bear in mind the belt is £105 + vat.

Car is a MY96 UK Turbo with 103,000miles on the clock in case that makes any odds?

What would you do?

Cam belts supposed to be done every 3 yrs or 45k miles. Is it worth the risk to not do it? For the sake of £100 or a new engine I'd personally do it, especially as you will be taking the current one off to do the job your on about.

I always change belts if they have to come off for any reason.
There is always the danger of contamination etc if you replace an old belt.

It can be v. expensive if cambelts break!!
£100 is cheap in comparison!

I only spent about 40 quid for a cam belt. Fit it in yourself as its much cheaper. Be prepared to swear a lot though..

I would never put an old cam belt back on (unless im selling the car )

I seriously doubt a garage would do this... if they did you wouldnt get a warranty... for the sake of 30quid??? do you want to take the chance??

The dealer is changing the oil seal. They would prefer to change the belt but are willing to put the old one back on if I tell them to.... but they will not warentee the work if the belt then snaps.

Thanks for your views.. the dealer will obviously supply there own belt which is £105+vat.............

I think I shall get a new one put on then.

If I was doing the work myself I think I'd probably put a new one on as it would then only cost me the belt, the seal and the time rather than the belt, the seal and 4hours labour.

Wonder if I could get a belt cheaper and supply them with it.

Where can you source a cheaper GENUINE belt from?

Depends if you have trade accounts... or nice friendly subaru garage that supply you at cost...

Supply the belt yourself... if they are prepared to put the old one back on then they should be prepared to put a different one on..

If you have the belt off because an oilseal has failed in close proximity to the belt, change the belt.

Dayco make OE cambelts and replacement cam belts for many cars, including subaru. The subaru fitment costs 40 quid.

Every 50-60k miles. Unless u are running big power or are unsure of history, which obviously isnt uncommon with imports.

For the sake of a few quid replace the belt mate,a lot cheaper than if it breaks.

Best practice says, Once tensioned the belt should never be re used. Its just not worth it for the price.
