hi all!
I'm looking for an ECU upgrade, but have hit on a few problems.
the main one being that ECUTEK wont work with my car being an MY98 (sure it's a 97, but the VIN says 98!)
Second , I dont really want to replace the ECU with a something like a LINK or MOTEC etc, nor have any add-in boxes to fool the ECU.
I've been following the ECUTEK stuff quite a bit but really dissapointed that for most of us classics out there, its not avalible!
Q) what is the technical issues that stop the ECUTEK being used. ( ECU's are obviously different - but surely the ODB-II is the same, so do they not all talk this way?)
Q) what is my best option when I want more drivability + power, and data logging would be nice!?
cheers,
Steve - in the land of the ECUTEK-less

Hi Steve my MY97WRX is going in for the Power Engineering Phase1 conversion soon. Basically it involves adding parts to the original ECU so that it can be remapped like the EcuTek unit. Have a look here for more info http://www.powerengineering.co.uk
Edited to say its under the Subaru link then Products

The PE phase 1 map got some 'bad press' in the past. Each 'accusation' turned out to really be <mapper-related> rather than <product related> - the phase 1 mapper I am pretty sure these days is the same as the EcuTek one (Mervyn), who is one of the best in the business. So take anything you might read about the phase 1 product (and probably would have done if the search worked!) with a pinch of salt.
In short, it should work pretty well!

None of the pre MY01 ECU's talk ODB-II but an OBD like protocol custom to Subaru. Like the man said, the pre 99 models were not flash programmable but the Power Engineering Phase 1 is a rom board add in which then allows them to "re-map" the ECU.

cheers for the info so far guys!
gona go check out the powerengineering site in a mo. I hope that will give me similar results to the ECUTEK + logging!?!?
so what would be involved in getting a newer ECU in? I'm sure it's a total nightmare! ???

The official ECUs aren't interchangeable - the piggyback system is one of the methods used (others are replacement & re-programming).
Nothing can be logged on with the pre-99 UK model oem ECUs, AFAIK

nom,
how about via the (subaru) ODB interface - i.e. select monitor port ?
how do they check the systems when they are mapping ? via one of these ?
will the PE phase1 be able to give the same results as ECUTEK?

The PE Phase-I conversion can often give even better results than the 99/00 ECU upgrades. Not because of the ECU, but because of the larger turbos fitted to the earlier cars.
Pre 99 cars can be monitored via the diagnostic port using a select monitor, just like the new cars. This is what PE do when mapping, as well as having live access to the ROMs to edit while mapping, det cans, exhaust gas analyser and rolling road.
Making DeltaDash work with earlier cars _is_ on my todo list, though I must admit, it isn't at the top at the moment. That's probably something to do with these 01/02 cars I think !
Cheers

Yeah !
I think I can almost say you'd be flooded with request if you did !
although I do understand u wana get the newer cars working first!
Would be interested (as David) in knowing if there might be a possibility of getting DeltaDash working with pre-99's as the GUI & nice bits are done.
thanks for the info on the Phase1. It's looking quite a feasable option at the mo. & probably one of the best if I dont want to totally rip out the ECU / bodge other bit on !
Just gota check how much it's gona hit the folding stuff :-o OUCH!
