another one of those thinking about thinking about threads.
OK, which would be better a charge cooler or a FMIC??
what options are available for CC's on an impreza? i know a few people have taken the CC bits from a subaru liberty (US version of legacy?) but are there other CC kits from imprezas?
Just wondering the advantages/disadvantages of both systems.

UK legacy has charge cooler... GavinP has one... andy f has made his own and may even part with it if you offer him the right price... I May be able to offer fabrication services soon.. (need to fund a welder somehow.... hows £1600 for labour sound )

I have been considering better cooling... just removed the bonnet vent covers...
Been thinking about adding water spray.. but the standard TMIC is so small that maybe a replacement might be better?
Anyway BTW... I looked into a CC for my MR2 turbo I had before the Scooby.. and the main reason for going for a CC was because with the engine in the back you couldn't get enough air onto an Intercooler. The best method there was to fit an intercooler on the roof... which looked pants..
So I think in short you'd be better fitting a FMIC... as there is enough room and you have lots of fresh air hitting it then.
A CC is only as cool as the water in it etc.. a FMIC with water spray must be the coolest intake available? Although I suppose a CC could be put in the TMIC position and would therefore not increase the air intake air journey to the inlet from the filter.
I'll be sticking with my cheap DIY Water spray if I get around to visiting a scrappy for a water bottle etc... for the moment anyway

I've just finished fitting one in my car, on a MY97 engine so I had to sort out the BOV too. It was a fairly cheap thing to do (about £150) although I can't quantify the improvements yet.
Can't get into the BBS how to page so can't post a pic, but there are loads on my website, http://www.ricola.co.uk
It was particularly useful for me as I don't get much airflow at the back of the car. People will always argue over which is best but from what I have rear there are the following arguments:
Air/water has larger heatsink so more easily absorbs spikes
-has more direct path from turbo to air inlet
-better for normal driving where not on constant full throttle
Air/Air is lighter
-simpler, less things to go wrong
-longer intake length so more pressure loss
-better for sustained boost as more direct heat transfer

I made a charge cooler system and it has given good results.
Dyno'd at 349bhp / 343lb-ft on std ECU, injectors and turbo, it certainly wasn't holding it back too much !!
Whether or not a FMIC would improve things further remains to be seen. For Fast Road, Sprint, Drag race and Dyno days the charge cooler is fine. For circuit use over an extended period (say 8+ laps) then a FMIC is probably superior.

Comparing power results from IC's/CC's on a rolling road, is VERY misleading.
"Most" of the gains seen, are not "gains", but just a lesser loss, due to the poor suitablity of RR fans to supply air to a TMIC.
You will see intake temps with a TMIC, on a RR, that you will NEVER see on the road. A well designed CC works well, but ultimately will also warm up, and the efficiency will deteriate. While a FMIC will be the most consistant.

Yes, I've got a nice BIG full width radiator for the charge water cooling. The most I have seen is a 5 deg C rise in water temperature, this was after 5 X 1/4 mile drag runs back to back.
Sitting with the fans on for 5 minutes dropped the temp back to ambient. A TMIC would just have got even hotter under these conditions.
Agree with Mark that FMIC is ultimately superior regards temperature control however you do have all that extra volume of pipework etc which, in my experience, takes the sharpness out of the throttle response.

Lot of good points made already...
Bear in mind, it is possible to put together a decent chargecooler system for £500 or less which is considerably cheaper than any front mounted ICs I have seen.
How many times are you going to ask this question, Markus ?
