Default Why was there a classic gearbox in my bug WRX?

My gearbox died a few weeks ago, so I looked in the engine bay to find the transmission code and sourced a matching replacement from a bug WRX wagon on Ebay: TY754VN2AA

I've managed to get the broken gearbox out today, and it's different

The broken gearbox which was fitted is code TY752VBCAA, which from a quick search seemed to be showing up results for classic STI. Is this correct? I'm thinking either the gearbox has been munched before and there was a classic box sitting around, or there is some benefit in using the older gearbox such as shorter ratios or stronger internals?

The older one which was fitted looks a lot bulkier to me which implies it may be a stronger box but I haven't got a clue beyond speculation.. There were a few differences - fewer fixing holes around the bell housing of the classic, different mounting bracket, whatever the square area is on top of the classic obviously not present on the bug..?

New box is the beige one

Cheers for any input!

Calum

So I've found out the broken gearbox was shorter ratio.

Am I going to feel a difference? Really worried the car is going to feel slow as f*ck now

Make sure the rear diff is the right ratio or you might end up breaking it

Yeah you need to check out the rear diff.

It may have been swapped to match teh Sti box. It might not have (which could have cuased that box to fail too).

Don't ask me which diff it should have with which box...I'm rubbish with codes.
