Harvey, Headers and downpipes (big post warning)
Hi All,
Just a write up on my recent purchase from Harvey hope it helps those who may be in a similar position as myself.
OK I brought my car as a standard my53 sti with ppp and like a lot on here I caught the bug and soon wanted more. After many tweaks the time came for a bigger turbo. Out went the vf35 and in came the 18G. The 18G absolutely murdered the vf35 on mid range torque but lost a little on spool up. To cut a long story short this addiction then drove me to get the 321H.
The 321H again bettered the 18G on out right mid range but again lost out on early spool. At this point the difference in spool vs outright 'ooomph' I felt was a bit too compromised.
I had the following mods, APS CAIK, APS bigger top mount, 650cc inj, autronics (with 3 port boost solenoid), ACT clutch and lightened flywheel. I had all the above mapped at Zen and once the turbo kicked in ....wow but I wanted to rain the spool back in by possibly 500 rpm. I'm not going to go into when it's spooling from and post my map results as I don't really want comments on that as such and the end of the story is good anyhow.....
So I was told of the options of headers of the likes from RCM, Zen, TSL (Perrin), etc and the possibility of ceramic coating, etc. I investigated this and even spoke to Zirotec and the overall costs I felt were just too much >£800+ all in (some a lot more than this).
My car is in the region of 375 - 380bhp and I thought with the headers I could maybe get c400bhp (what i was really after was just more faster spooling...... I later found out)
So after many searches I came across Harvey. Sent an email on a Thursday/Friday, we spoke over the weekend and by the Tuesday I was on my way (360 mile round trip) to see Harvey.
I settled on getting the following done: 1) Ported headers,
2) matching up-pipe
3)wrapping of these and my downpipe (from a decat Miltek exhaust)
4) Turbo blanket
While I was there I also opted for getting some lightened pulleys fitted at the same time.
I set out at 5:45 and was there about 9:15am (not much traffic on the roads ).
When I arrived was greeted by a friendly guy, his dog and his assistants. He then took me to his house, left me there 'on my own' with a full run of the sky TV, coffee, food, fruit, loads of magazines, etc.... wow talk about service.
Anyway I'm gonna fast forward this as I have alreday gone on too long. After explaining everything to me about the initial burning smell I may get from the wrapped headers, etc I was on my way home (180 mile trip....)
and all I can say is eureka ....... That hesitation you usually get just as you take your foot off acceleration, change gear then plant it again all gone, It was like instant power. Spooling was up a lot too and with all the lightened stuff now working in harmony I can only properly change gears by using the gear change light in the scooby as things happen just so fast.
It's like 1st woosh to 5000rpm, change to 2nd wooosh, change to third, all really really fast. What I now realise I was after was just the faster spooling, lack of lag to complete this 321H setup.
I intend to get a final mapping done by Paul in December I'm not expecting a great jump in the figures but I have now found that missing link ....
If you are in a similar position to me and own the vf35, 18G or 321H (the only ones I've owned) but don't have upgraded headers I would say 100% go this route. It just fixes that 'missing bit' and if you are like me you'll know exactly what I'm on about. That bit where once fixed you can say "Yep thats it....." plant foot change, plant foot change.
Of course I have a complimentary mods list but most of these were already on before the headers and stuff.....
I've tried to explain it in a non technical way as I know anyone in my position will know exactly what I mean......
Hope this helps and a big thankyou to Harvey what a smashing guy and down to earth good old customer service..........

Harvey is a perfect gentleman always with time to talk to us mere mortals, as long as we don't mess him about, with advice and service to boot.
Good stuff at a good price.

We have had guys from as far afield as Brighton or Inverness and many points in between for some of our specialist services and because most of the things we are doing, we are doing on a regular basis what might take somebody else two days might take us less than a day so our charges reflect this.
Ray : I should also point out that it was Darren and Peter that did most of the physical work in terms of the fitting to your car although I was responsible for the headers and wrapping but Darren and Peter deserve recognition for knocking it off quickly and having the facilities ready to get on with your job within minutes of your arrival.
Cheers Mate and to everyone who has made kind comments.
