Power Engineering & ScoobySport.... im gonna cry
#1
I have an sti v5 heavily modded (link, hybrid turbo, uprated fuel pump, susp, etc etc) to 333bhp. A clinking noise has slowly been gettin worse when I turn the wheels (either direction !)It sounds like metal flicking on metal.
Power engineering thinks the front diff needs rebuilding and Scoobysport diagnosed the problem as 90% sure the driveshaft ends need replacing.
I dont know what to do ?? Obviously a diff is gonna be way more expensive than a pair of driveshaft ends, but I want to be sure I am gettin the right bit fixed and not just throwing money after a cheaper solution.
Has anyone else had this problem, and are there any other companies I could get a diagnosis from bearing in mind im based in bournemouth (although wil go as far as essex (ish) to get the right people to do the job properly.?

Why not call Len @ Subaru 4 You. I always use him for fitting my mods to my car, servicing, etc... and I've never had a problem.
I think quite a few others in the Berkshire area have used him for all kinds of things in the past (blown turbo's, etc..) so I'm sure he'll be able to help with your problem.

mate, I can 1000% vouch for either Len at Subaru 4 You or Rally Colin as being genuine blokes who will tell you what is wrong and not rip you off.
Take a trip to Reading (they're not far from each other) see em both and I bet you they will both tell you the same thing

I came to my diagnosis for a couple of reasons...
First, the noise is coming from the driveshaft ends, not the diff.
Second, if the diff locks, its almost impossible to turn in the car and the tyres will actually skip and judder as it goes round.
Putting the car on the ramp didn't reveal the gearbox vibration that you said someone else saw so I had no reason to change my advice.
If I am wrong and it isn't the CVJs, then you wouldn't be charged for that work, just like we didn't charge you for spending 45 minutes trying to get to the bottom of the problem yesterday. Was there a problem with what we did?

Darleydude,
Pete is quite right in what he said. I've used Scoobysport before and they are a good outfit. They have been doing it long enough to know what's what. As pete said, if after they fix the problem and it's not fixed then they wouldn't charge for it. What have you got to lose (apart from pound notes) it's got to be done and i would put my faith in the ScoobySport guys.
As for the other companys mentioned..don't know. P.E. are in my opinion good at finding engine faults on the rollers but i don't know about the diff side of things. (not putting them down as i do use them).
At the end of the day it's upto you. At least you have it in writting about "no charge if problem not fixed", even though that is somewhere in the consumer rights.
Good luck.
Adam

I can't imagine anyone on this board can help not being able to see the car.. My guess is "its probably your head gasket m8"
Scoobysport and P.E. are hardly going to rip you off fixing stuff that doesnt need to be done.....
So my advise is to take the advise of someone whos seen the car and is an old pro (sorry Pete - not that old) rather than get conflicting information from people on this thread who dont actually have access to the car to base there opinion on! All you'll do is confuse yourself even more
Its knackered... so get a pro to fix it ...

Thank you everyone for all for your comments.
To Pete Croney
Pete, I appreciate u didn't charge me for your time yesterday, and to be fair to P.E neither did they. Both compainies were very friendly & gracious towards me.
I know very little about the mechanical side of cars except that the faster they go the more money they cost to fix when they go wrong.
Bearing this in mind, I was/am relying on expert advice from yourself and P.E. When the advice conflicted, I wasnt sure who was right, hence the post seekin advice.
Pete you are obviously more than 90% sure it is the cvj's as proved by your generous offer which I will undoubtably take you up on.
I'll give knowlsey (spelling ?) a call and book her in.
Cheers

Durleydude- hardly a fair title to your thread really.
First impressions imply a real moan about the said companies for everybody to see on the board.
On reading it the problem lies with your indecision only.
Scoobysport and Power Engineering were both very fair in spending time looking and not charging you.
Go with Pete's offer, he will get it right and you will be charged accordingly, surely?
Remember, these guy's have to earn a living but also can't afford to rip people off otherwise no-one will go back.

I am disgusted by the treatment my 22B received by both companies I recommend you attend Barrattes MotorSport in Canterbury as they are Subaru specialists who have been trained! Not oportunists jumping on the Impreza band wagon 4 years ago

well I know someone who had a engine let go after a rebuild Barretts did, 3,500 miles only...yup right...
end of the day things could go wrong its the effort that is made to put it right, I can say that for Barrett and also Scooby sport...

Harry - no profile details as I would e mail you off line
When rebuilding engines/modifications and that usually goes for all garages it depends what the customer has specified.
Of course a rebuild could consist of standard parts or for instance steel crank, steel rods and uprated pistons. Yep its gonna cost and whilst you may see no performance gains the engine will be much stronger than standard.
Though I'm sure all companies if notified of problems or are aware of your disappointment at the time would have gone someway to making sure it was right.
